Documentary filmmakers verify and protect conflict-zone sources through separate, connected checks: confirm who a source is, test what they say, authenticate images, secure informed consent, assess exposure risks, and review the finished film for identifying details. No app, disguise, or single identity check can guarantee safety. The right process depends on the source, the claim, local conditions, employer policy, and who might try to identify or reach the people involved.
Why source verification and protection are separate tasks
Knowing that a contact is who they claim to be does not prove that their information is true. A witness may be honestly mistaken; a knowledgeable source may have a motive to mislead; and an authentic video may be old, filmed elsewhere, or presented without its original context. At the same time, a correctly verified source may face danger because of the way a filmmaker records, stores, edits, or publishes their contribution.
A sound workflow therefore keeps distinct records for identity, the source’s access and reliability, evidence for each claim, permissions, and exposure risks. These records should connect, so an editor can see where a factual statement or image came from and what checks it passed, without making sensitive identity information available to everyone handling the production.
This is general international guidance, not legal advice or a live threat assessment. Laws, surveillance capacity, communications access, border rules, and conflict conditions vary. Check requirements for the actual assignment and consult an appropriate legal or digital-security specialist when exposure could have serious consequences.

Build a record for each claim, not just each interview
Start by writing down exactly what the source says they know. Separate firsthand observation from inference, hearsay, and information learned from another person. Record when and where the information arose, what the source could reasonably have observed, and what evidence might contradict it. Preserve uncertainty in the notes rather than allowing a tentative account to become certain through editing.
Identity verification and claim verification belong in different parts of this record. A contact can pass an identity check while a claim remains uncorroborated. Conversely, a document or image may support a claim without establishing who supplied it or whether that person has permission to share it.
For consequential claims, seek independent documents, firsthand accounts, or other evidence. Several people repeating one account are not necessarily several independent confirmations. The Associated Press describes corroborating facts with several independent, reliable sources and says, “Verification is built into every step of AP journalism — from assignment to publication.” Treat that as an editorial discipline, not a numerical formula: the evidence needed depends on the claim and the potential harm of getting it wrong. Mark disagreements and unresolved points in the fact-check record.
Verify a confidential source’s identity and contact safely
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) recommends agreeing on a repeatable way to verify that a confidential contact is the person expected, then using it each time the journalist communicates with them. This could be an unusual phrase or a question with an agreed answer. The method should be set up in advance and should not depend on information an adversary could easily obtain.

A repeatable check helps detect an unexpected change in contact, but it does not establish that the source’s claims are accurate. Nor does an encrypted channel, by itself, establish who is on the other end. Treat identity, communication security, and factual reliability as different checks.
Agree on a safe contact channel and a missed-check-in plan appropriate to the circumstances. Consider what to do if the source stops responding, a device is lost, or a communication pattern changes unexpectedly. Keep contact to what is necessary: routine, frequent exchanges can create traces or draw attention even when message contents are protected. CPJ’s 2021 guidance also advises assessing how useful and reliable the information is and whether the source could pose a risk to the journalist or organization.
Authenticate footage, photographs, and other visual evidence
For a supplied image or clip, establish provenance as well as appearance. Ask who made it, when and where, how it reached the production, whether the person sharing it was the original filmer, and whether the filmmaker has permission to use it. Preserve the original securely where doing so is safe, and record any transformations made for editing.
AP’s verification guidance describes several useful checks: reverse-image search; geolocation; comparing landmarks, signs, weather, and language; examining footage frame by frame for signs of manipulation; and contacting the original filmer for further validation and permission. These checks can strengthen or challenge an attribution, but they do not guarantee that every image can be conclusively authenticated.

Check what the footage actually shows against the story attached to it. A genuine clip can be miscaptioned, filmed at a different time or place, or cut in a way that changes its meaning. Examine whether its timing and sequence support the claim being made. If the source or circumstances cannot be established sufficiently, keep that uncertainty visible in the edit and decide whether the material can be used responsibly.
Fact-check the cut, including what images imply
Verification continues after filming. FRONTLINE’s standards call for checking every factual assertion in narration and interview material and every picture. That includes names and spelling, titles, dates, translations, expert assertions, and claims made by interviewees who are not experts. Maintain an annotated script or fact-check document that points back to the relevant source material and records the checks made.
Review images in context, not only captions. A picture placed beside narration can imply a location, date, identity, or connection even when the words do not state it outright. Check whether the sequence, translation, and edit preserve what a source said and what the material can support. For allegations that could damage a person’s reputation or professional competence, require verification before publication; do not use an unverified allegation as if it were established fact.
Explain confidentiality limits before asking for consent
Before promising confidentiality, find out what the person wants: to be named, credited in another way, filmed without identifying details, or not recorded. Explain the practical exposure risks in language they can understand, including that anonymity in the film may not prevent recognition through a voice, accent, clothing, location, background, or details in the story.

Consent is not a one-time signature that resolves every question. Agree in advance on what may be recorded and published, and revisit the plan if the material or risk changes. Where a contributor’s safety could be affected, consider whether the way footage is gathered or the timing and context of publication create additional exposure. The decision must be informed and voluntary, not based on an assurance the production cannot keep.
Check employer rules and applicable law before offering secrecy. CPJ notes that obligations differ by country and employer, and an organization may require a journalist to share a confidential source’s identity with editors. A filmmaker should understand who inside the production can access the identity, what may have to be disclosed, and what legal protections do or do not apply. UNESCO’s 2017 summary of research covering 2007–2015 describes mass and targeted surveillance, data retention, and broad national-security or antiterrorism measures as pressures on confidentiality; it notes that digital change has strained legal frameworks. Those findings are context, not a statement of the law in any particular place today.

Do not treat “secure” settings as a universal recipe. Ask who might want to identify the source, what authority or technical capability they may have, and what traces the production creates. Include the source’s own access to devices and networks, the possibility of monitoring, and the consequences if contact or files are exposed. Reassess when circumstances change; a method that was acceptable earlier may become unsafe after a source’s role or location changes.
CPJ’s digital-safety guidance recommends assessing digital risks, keeping sensitive source contact off personal or work devices where possible, using strong unique passwords and two-factor authentication, keeping software updated, limiting contact, and using end-to-end encrypted messaging where appropriate. These are risk-reduction measures, not guarantees. App availability, network conditions, legal restrictions, and the source’s ability to use a tool safely vary. CPJ also warns that deleting a message from an account may leave a copy on a server.

Plan how identity information and raw material are handled across the production. Limit access to footage and identity keys to people who need them; keep identity records separate from general production files. Decide how material will be transferred, backed up, retained, and deleted, taking into account legal and operational needs. Footage can expose people through faces and voices, but also through accents, tattoos, clothing, landmarks, reflections, family details, paperwork, metadata, and combinations of story facts. There is no universally safe anonymization recipe: an edit that hides a face may still leave enough context for recognition.
If the consequences of exposure are serious or the right approach is uncertain, seek advice from a digital-security specialist before collecting or moving sensitive material. Consider whether recording is necessary at all, and whether a less revealing form of evidence can support the reporting.
Plan physical safety and contributor support before deployment
Source protection is part of assignment planning, alongside the safety of the crew. CPJ’s pre-assignment guidance groups preparation into risk assessment, communication plans, training, insurance, personal protective equipment (PPE), medical readiness, trauma preparedness, and digital preparedness. Make plans for the specific assignment: routes, emergency contacts, check-in procedures, and what happens if communications fail. Review insurance exclusions and local law directly. CPJ says listed training providers and insurance policies are not individually vetted or endorsed.
Choose PPE through an assignment-specific assessment rather than assuming one type or model suits every conflict. Confirm fit, the actual protection rating, maintenance requirements, local regulations, and border restrictions before travel. CPJ notes that country rules differ and should be researched. Equipment can address some hazards but cannot make a location safe or replace planning and judgment.

Include them in decisions that affect their safety, and address payment, credit, secure contact, emergency support, and exposure after publication. A filmmaker’s own security plan does not automatically protect local contributors. ACOS Alliance’s resource directory points to Doc Society’s Safe + Secure, a resource designed for documentary filmmakers and funders that addresses digital, legal, journalistic, physical-safety, and health risks.
Revisit the decision as conditions change
There is no universally safest method for every source or assignment. Compare choices by the likely adversary’s capability and access to devices or networks; the traces created by contact and collected data; the source’s technical access and safety; local law, employer policy, and border rules; the strength of corroboration; what remains identifiable after editing; and what happens if the source or crew loses contact.
A change that improves one dimension can worsen another: for example, collecting additional identifying detail may strengthen verification but increase exposure, while removing context may reduce identifiability but weaken the audience’s ability to assess the evidence. Record why a choice was made, who was consulted, and when it should be reviewed. If a new development changes the threat or the evidence, revisit consent, access, storage, editing, and publication decisions rather than relying on the original plan.
