This is the show’s invented origin story, not an episode from Tolkien’s books.
How did Sauron survive Adar?
After Adar and the Orcs turn against him in the Season 2 flashback, Sauron’s body collapses into a dark, viscous mass that sinks into the depths of Middle-earth. The series depicts this remnant persisting by feeding on small creatures such as rodents and insects. It escapes its underground tomb, consumes a traveler and later assumes a human appearance: Halbrand.
ILM senior visual effects supervisor Jason Smith discussed the sequence as both a visual-effects challenge and a story choice: “It’s so intertwined with the story, it’s exactly the story that needs to be told about that character.” The scene shows survival and transformation; it does not establish that Sauron was permanently destroyed.
Did Adar really kill Sauron?
In the series, Adar’s coup appears to kill Sauron, but the later events reveal that it did not end his existence. The show’s account is a killing-and-rebirth story: Sauron survives in a diminished form and eventually returns in disguise.

Halbrand is one of those disguises. Later, Sauron uses the persona Annatar to influence the Elves and the making of the Rings, placing the origin flashback within the series’ larger story of deception. Amazon’s official overview of the show identifies Halbrand as Sauron and describes Annatar’s role.
How the series’ story differs from Tolkien
Adar’s coup and this specific rebirth are inventions of The Rings of Power, not events Tolkien describes. TIME notes that Adar is an original character for the series and that Tolkien does not depict a rival killing and rebirth of Sauron in this way. Tolkien’s writing does describe Sauron changing form after Morgoth’s defeat, but that is not the same event as the show’s goo-like survival sequence.

Actor Charlie Vickers has said Tolkien’s letters influenced his portrayal of Sauron. That broader character inspiration does not make the series’ particular origin flashback a Tolkien episode.
