Spoilers for Dexter, Dexter: New Blood, and later franchise continuity. Dexter has two major on-screen endings. The original series ends with Dexter alive in self-imposed exile as a lumberjack, while Dexter: New Blood ends with Harrison shooting him after Dexter kills Logan. Neither ending should be confused with the franchise’s ongoing sequel continuity: as of October 2026, Dexter: Resurrection continues the story.
How did the original Dexter series end?
In the 2013 finale of the original eight-season series, Dexter survives a hurricane, takes Debra’s body out to sea, and is presumed dead. The final scene reveals that he has instead withdrawn from everyone and is living alone as a lumberjack.
Hannah has gone to Argentina with Dexter’s son, Harrison. Dexter’s choice leaves them to begin a life without him, while he accepts exile rather than returning to them. The lumberjack ending is the conclusion of the original series—not the later ending of New Blood.
What happens in the Dexter: New Blood finale?
Years later, Harrison finds Dexter in Iron Lake. Angela Bishop’s investigation connects Dexter to the Bay Harbor Butcher murders, and she anticipates his return to Florida to face trial. Dexter escapes custody, killing Logan in the process. Harrison sees what happened and recognizes that his father has crossed the line he claimed his code would never cross.

Why did New Blood give Dexter a different ending?
Showrunner Clyde Phillips said Dexter’s death was planned for New Blood. He explained the aim this way: “We wanted to bring as much humanity as we could to the ending of the show, and to say goodbye to the character with dignity and integrity.” Phillips framed Harrison as the person who finally prevents Dexter from repeatedly escaping consequences. In his interpretation, Harrison sees that Dexter’s code is broken, and Dexter recognizes what his actions have cost.

Phillips also said Jennifer Carpenter suggested the final version of the confrontation, in which Debra pulls her hand away from Dexter. That image connects the physical ending to Dexter’s guilt and to the conscience Debra represents in the revival.
Michael C. Hall later described Dexter’s exile in the original finale as narratively sensible, while acknowledging that viewers did not want that outcome. Hall characterized New Blood as a bridge from Dexter still being alive toward the later continuation. That is Hall’s retrospective interpretation, not a change to what the 2013 finale depicts.
Is New Blood the end of Dexter?
No. New Blood ends with Harrison shooting Dexter, but Paramount+ describes Dexter: Resurrection as an ongoing sequel series continuing the story after New Blood. Its October 2026 retrospective says the franchise continued with a second season scheduled for October 30, 2026; that scheduled release date is time-sensitive.
Paramount+ counts four television series in the franchise as of October 2026: Dexter, Dexter: New Blood, Dexter: Original Sin, and Dexter: Resurrection. It lists the original series as eight seasons and 96 episodes, and gives October 1, 2006, as its premiere date. The books by Jeff Lindsay are source material, but they are separate from the television series’ continuity and do not resolve its endings.
