Descendants: The Rise of Red honors Cameron Boyce through his character, Carlos: in a brief scene at Auradon Prep, Uma tells Fairy Godmother that Carlos would have wanted Red to receive a second chance. A portrait of Carlos makes the remembrance visible. The film does not feature newly filmed footage of Boyce.
What happens in the tribute scene?
In the principal’s office at Auradon Prep, Uma (China Anne McClain), now the school’s head, speaks with Fairy Godmother (Melanie Paxson) about giving Red a second chance. Red is a misunderstood villain’s child, and Uma connects that choice to Carlos, saying it is what he would have wanted. A portrait of Carlos appears in the scene as a visual tribute.
The moment brings Carlos into the film’s present-day story through dialogue and remembrance, rather than through a new appearance by Boyce. The cited interview does not identify the portrait’s provenance or give a timecode for the scene.
Why did the filmmakers connect Carlos to inclusion?
Executive producer Suzanne Todd told TVLine that the filmmakers considered different approaches because the subject was delicate and important. They spoke with McClain and her family before settling on a story point about inclusion and ending segregation in Carlos’s name. Todd said: “And I have to say that the story point we ended up going with, about inclusion and ending this segregation in Carlos’ name, is so on point for our universe and what we’re trying to promote.”

How the tribute fits the film’s story
In Disney’s May 24, 2024 announcement, Uma invites Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, to Auradon Prep. After a coup, Red and Cinderella’s daughter Chloe travel back in time to try to undo the event that shaped the Queen of Hearts’ villainous path. Within that story, Uma’s appeal to Carlos’s values links the decision to welcome Red with the film’s theme of inclusion.
