Cabrini (2024) follows Francesca Cabrini’s fight to secure housing and health care for orphaned children in New York. Cristiana Dell’Anna, who plays Cabrini, and David Morse, who plays Archbishop Corrigan, have described the story in terms of doing what is right through hardship. Their perspectives make kindness a useful lens on the film—but not a phrase they are quoted as using.

What is Cabrini about?

Directed by Alejandro Monteverde, Cabrini is a biographical drama about the Italian missionary’s work in New York after her arrival in 1889. The story centers on her effort to persuade the mayor to provide housing and health care for orphaned children, despite resistance from civic and church authorities.

The film presents that campaign against a city marked by poverty, disease, and crime. Angel’s official synopsis frames Cabrini as risking everything to petition the mayor on behalf of the city’s orphans; Rialto Distribution also emphasizes her poor health and broken English as she seeks support for vulnerable people. Angel’s film page and Rialto Distribution’s listing provide their respective summaries.

What did Cristiana Dell’Anna say about playing Cabrini?

In a March 8, 2024 interview with UPI, Dell’Anna said she wanted the role because Cabrini devoted her life to helping others, even when doing so was difficult. “I wanted to be her,” she said. She also described life as a continuing effort to overcome obstacles, especially for women, and said people must keep acting and doing the right things if they want things to go right. UPI’s interview is the source for these remarks.

That framing fits the film’s portrayal of service as persistent work rather than a single act of generosity. Cabrini’s campaign requires her to keep approaching people with power even after facing dismissal. Dell’Anna’s comments connect that persistence to the character’s appeal: helping others can demand courage and action, not just good intentions.

How does David Morse interpret the film’s message?

Morse plays Archbishop Augustine Corrigan, who is depicted as Cabrini’s foe-turned-ally. He told UPI that the filmmakers set out to make a good movie, rather than begin with a message to deliver. In his view, the film’s force emerges from Dell’Anna’s performance and Cabrini’s life. He described its themes as courage and strength in adversity, adding, “It really was resilience when you think of how difficult that world was.”

The distinction matters: Morse’s remarks do not amount to a claim that the film is a lesson in kindness. They point instead to a story in which care for people in need is bound up with resilience, and in which institutions and relationships can change as the struggle unfolds.

Is Cabrini based on a true story?

The film portrays the historical Francesca Cabrini, but it is a dramatized biographical account, not a documentary. Its central subject is grounded in her mission and work; individual scenes and dramatic encounters should be understood as part of the film’s storytelling rather than treated automatically as a verbatim historical record.

The Italian National Commission for Film Evaluation reads the film as engaging with poverty, education, faith, women, social marginalization, solidarity, politics, and power. Its interpretation is a critical perspective, not a neutral historical verdict. The Commission praises Dell’Anna’s performance and calls the film recommendable and suitable for discussion, while also noting its imposing, sometimes didactic presentation and occasional sentimentality. Its evaluation describes the film as “a recommendable, realistic film for discussion.” The Commission’s evaluation offers that assessment.

Biographical totals also vary by publisher and should remain attributed. Rialto Distribution says Cabrini made 23 transatlantic missionary trips and that 67 hospitals, orphanages, and schools were established over 34 years. The Commission describes 67 institutions as founded “in a few years” and notes her 1946 canonization by Pope Pius XII. These pages are distributors’ and an evaluation body’s accounts, not primary historical records; their different descriptions of the institutions’ timeline should not be merged.

Who is in the cast, and how long is the film?

Dell’Anna portrays Francesca Cabrini and Morse portrays Archbishop Corrigan. The Italian National Commission for Film Evaluation lists the original title as Francesca Cabrini, a 142-minute runtime, and the United States as the film’s national origin. Angel lists a runtime of 2 hours 22 minutes and a PG-13 rating. Angel’s viewing page has its cast and rating details.

Where can you watch Cabrini?

Angel’s official film page lists Blu-ray and DVD purchase options. Digital availability depends on territory and can change, so check the official pages for current options rather than relying on a platform listing that may be out of date. Rialto Distribution describes the film as available digitally in its distribution territory; that does not establish availability in every country. See Angel’s film page and Rialto Distribution’s page for the relevant listings.
