After Cole Brings Plenty died in April 2024, Jeremy Gauna took over his role as Pete Plenty Clouds in 1923 Season 2. Gauna said he had known Brings Plenty personally and saw the part as a chance to honor his friend and his family. That made filming Pete’s eventual death especially difficult for him—but the reporting does not establish that Brings Plenty’s death alone caused the show’s fictional deaths.
Why Jeremy Gauna took over Pete Plenty Clouds
Brings Plenty played Pete Plenty Clouds in the first season of 1923. After his death, Gauna stepped into the role for Season 2. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gauna said he knew Brings Plenty personally and understood the recasting as an opportunity to honor him and his family.
The change therefore carried more than the usual pressure of taking over an established character: Gauna was continuing a part associated with someone he had known and lost. Gauna also spoke about Indigenous representation, saying that these stories can be difficult to watch but that telling them can help audiences learn about history. That is his perspective on the value and emotional weight of the storytelling.
How Brings Plenty’s death affected the cast
Gauna described filming Pete’s death as difficult because of what had happened to his friend in real life. His account makes the overlap between the character’s fictional fate and Brings Plenty’s death part of the emotional context of the scene; it should not be taken to mean that every cast member experienced the moment in the same way.

Aminah Nieves, who plays Teonna Rainwater, also spoke about the grief surrounding the loss. In a TV Insider interview, she described feeling grief and initial resentment about returning, then choosing to honor Brings Plenty and support Gauna as he took on the role.
Did Pete die in Season 2?
Yes. Pete was among several characters killed in the March 30, 2025 episode, according to Collider. The series’ decision to kill Pete is not, by itself, evidence that Brings Plenty’s death determined the character’s ending.

TV Insider reported that Taylor Sheridan had planned Pete’s return, knew the character would die during the season, and considered—but ultimately abandoned—the possibility of Pete riding off and disappearing. Those reported story plans distinguish the character’s arc from the real-life circumstances that made filming it especially painful for Gauna.
How *1923* honored Cole Brings Plenty
The Season 2 premiere included an in memoriam tribute to Brings Plenty, TV Insider reported. The tribute was one public acknowledgment of his death, while Gauna’s decision to take on Pete and Nieves’s stated support for him formed part of the cast’s personal response.
