Elizabeth Olsen and Aubrey Plaza appeared to form a warm friendship while filming Ingrid Goes West in 2017. They said the challenging shoot helped them bond, and director Matt Spicer said they loved each other. Those accounts describe their working relationship at the time; they do not establish how close the actresses are today.
What did Olsen and Plaza say about their relationship?
In a joint W Magazine interview published August 9, 2017, Olsen and Plaza recalled meeting briefly before the film at the Mohawk General Store in Silver Lake, through a friend Olsen knew. Their more substantial time together came during production.
While filming in the Joshua Tree area, they shared a home with director Matt Spicer. Olsen recalled that they were considerate of the house; Plaza joked about borrowing hats and ponchos. Asked whether the difficult conditions brought them together, Plaza said, “But it was good. It helped us band together.”
What did the director observe on set?
At the film’s New York premiere, Spicer described the actresses’ rapport in comments reported by Vogue on August 9, 2017: “They loved each other, which is great, because with their characters you really needed to feel that bond and that friendship.” Olsen also said she enjoyed trying to make Plaza laugh during filming.

A Sundance interview and report published February 8, 2017 offers further production-era signs of rapport. Olsen jokingly said, “I fell in love with Aubrey…” in an affectionate account, and the reporter described Plaza taking sneaky photos of Olsen on set. The remark was playful, not evidence of a romantic relationship.
Does that mean they are still close?
Not necessarily. The public accounts cited here are from the film’s 2017 production and release period. They support saying the actresses developed a friendly bond while working together, but they do not document whether they keep in touch or socialize now. There is no published statistic or reliable measure of their personal closeness.

Keep the film’s characters separate from the actresses
In Ingrid Goes West, Plaza plays Ingrid and Olsen plays Taylor, whose fictional relationship is central to the story. That on-screen bond is part of the film, not proof about the actors’ private lives. A January 23, 2017 Nylon interview discusses the actresses and the film, but claims about their real relationship are best grounded in what they and Spicer said about their time working together.
