His noticeably changed appearance became a joke in the premiere, while the season’s broader story showed Carter gradually learning responsibility and building a more open relationship with Rip. The interviews available do not establish that Little’s growth spurt caused the writers to change a specific planned storyline.
Was Carter played by a different actor in Season 5?
No. Finn Little continued as Carter. Viewers noticed that he looked much older after the gap between seasons, prompting questions about whether the role had been recast. Esquire’s November 14, 2022 coverage addressed the surprise and the show’s response.
How did Yellowstone acknowledge Carter’s growth?
The Season 5 premiere made the change in Carter’s appearance part of a joke in his interaction with John Dutton. That on-screen moment folded the audience’s surprise into the show rather than pretending Carter looked the same. Esquire describes the premiere exchange in its coverage.
How did Carter’s relationship with Rip develop?
Actor Cole Hauser described Carter’s progress as gradual, not as an overnight transformation. In an Entertainment Tonight interview published November 7, 2022, Hauser said, “It’s been kind of a slow crawl and he certainly hasn’t given Carter any breaks.” He described Carter as learning, making mistakes, and continuing to try, while Rip becomes more open with him.

Hauser also emphasized Carter taking on more responsibility. In a Parade interview published November 13, 2022, he said, “But the great thing about this year with Finn and me, the relationship growing is that Carter’s stepping up.” That points to a character arc built around effort and increasing responsibility within his relationship with Rip.

The available interviews do not say that Little’s physical growth by itself forced a defined change to the Season 5 plot. What is established is narrower: the premiere acknowledged Carter’s changed appearance with a joke, and Hauser discussed a gradual character progression involving learning, responsibility, and a changing relationship with Rip. Hauser estimated Little was “6-foot-1” in the Entertainment Tonight interview; that is Hauser’s estimate, not an independently verified height measurement.
