Borderlands bridges games and film by treating the gap between them as creative territory, not a problem to erase. Gearbox president Randy Pitchford describes the franchise as a deliberately unruly blend of genres—and the movie as a chance to explore what happens when an interactive world becomes a linear story.
What does “the borderland” mean?
For Pitchford, a borderland is the messy meeting place between unlike things. Borderlands began, he says, by joining role-playing mechanics and shooter action: “We jammed an RPG and a shooter together, which had no business being together. We created a genre.” He also points to the franchise’s western and science-fiction influences, and to its mixture of surrealism and realism, comedy and drama. Characters, too, can sit between who they want to be and who they are. GamesBeat’s interview with Pitchford presents that in-between quality as central to the series’ identity.
Pitchford likens the combination to a “Reese’s peanut butter cup”: elements that may seem incompatible can work together as a distinct whole. That sensibility gives the film more to draw on than a setting or a collection of recognizable characters; it gives the adaptation a way to approach contrasts in tone and genre.
How does Borderlands bridge film and games?
A game and a movie tell stories differently. In a game, players act within the story and shape their own experience through play. A film presents a linear sequence of events to an audience. Pitchford describes the movie as a chance to explore that boundary between interactive and linear storytelling, a new creative challenge alongside the franchise’s existing mix of genres. He told GamesBeat that “the opportunity to try to do it, to play with the borderland between interactive and linear” was something he had to explore.

The point is not to make a movie behave exactly like a game. A player’s experience comes from taking part; a viewer’s comes from following a story shaped for the screen. Pitchford sees room for both experiences to belong to the same franchise without one replacing the other.
Is the Borderlands movie the same story as the games?
No. Pitchford describes the film as a separate cinematic universe that draws on the games’ characters, world, themes and some plot points, but does not reproduce their exact storylines. His reasoning is that players already have the stories and experiences of the games; the movie should offer something different. As he put it, “If you’ve consumed the video games you already have that story, that experience, and so we want you to get something out of this movie, something that you couldn’t possibly get in a video game.” Epic Games Store’s feature on the adaptation reports Pitchford’s explanation.

Director Eli Roth makes a similar distinction: “As I told Ari and Randy Pitchford and everyone at the beginning, my job is to make an adaptation of the game—not a recreation of the game,” he said. Roth explains that a feature film needs to deepen characters and adjust elements that may work in a game but not sustain a roughly 90-minute movie. Pitchford encouraged the production to make a movie rather than reproduce the game. The shared world therefore does not, by itself, establish that the film retells or fits the games’ continuity.
What stays connected to the games?
The adaptation retains recognizable franchise material while changing the form and storyline. Pitchford served as an on-site franchise consultant, advising on lore, visual design, vehicles and sets. Gearbox also supported production with game assets; some were used to create 3D-printed weapons, and Gearbox developers contributed rendered pixels, according to the Epic Games Store production feature.

That support helps explain how a film can evoke Borderlands without copying the experience of playing it. The world and its visual language can carry across, while the screenplay, pacing and audience’s role change for cinema.
Jamie Lee Curtis’s connection to game culture
Jamie Lee Curtis plays Dr. Tannis, and her connection to gaming culture gives another personal link between the franchise and its screen cast. In her GamesBeat interview, Curtis describes herself as a “gamer mom,” says she has attended Evo and anime conventions, and recounts hosting a cosplay wedding as Jaina Proudmoore from World of Warcraft. Those are her own accounts of taking part in gaming and fandom; they do not, on their own, explain her casting or performance as Tannis.

What viewers and players should expect
Think of the movie as a separate way into Borderlands, not a substitute for the games or a scene-for-scene retelling. It can share their characters, world and themes while telling a distinct linear story, shaped for a film audience. Pitchford’s idea of a borderland is precisely that possibility: two different forms meeting without losing what makes each one its own experience.
