In a 2023 interview with POPLine, Brazilian dancer and choreographer Ramana Borba traced her path from a shy teenager taking her first dance class to an artist shaping videos around choreography, setting and performance. She also explained why Beyoncé’s “Formation” helped her define the kind of art she wanted to make—and why she began putting more Black dancers at the center of the online dance conversation.
How Ramana Borba got started in dance
Borba said she loved dance but was too shy to begin classes. In her account to POPLine, she took her first class at about 13 or 14 and later began professionalizing her work at 16. She recalled that the first class felt intimidating: she had entered a room with professional dancers. Rather than putting her off, the experience prompted her to study and research dance more deeply.
Her description makes the start of her career sound less like a sudden leap than a gradual decision to keep learning. The ages and sequence here are Borba’s account in the May 12, 2023 interview, not an independently verified or current biography.
Why she started posting dance videos
Borba told POPLine that she began posting on YouTube because she enjoyed watching dance videos, but noticed that prominent Brazilian dance channels featured few Black protagonists. She said that absence bothered her. She also described unequal expectations and distribution as challenges Black creators faced online.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those observations are Borba’s experience and perspective, not a measured finding about every Brazilian channel or the platform as a whole. Her decision to publish videos was both a way to share dance and a response to who she saw represented in the dance content she followed.
What went into her videos
Borba described her videos as planned productions rather than just a camera recording a dance. She named choreography, location, clothing, makeup and the dancers as parts of the work. In the 2023 interview, she said her small core team consisted of two videographers and her mother. That is a snapshot of the team at the time, not a statement about her current operation.

How Beyoncé’s “Formation” influenced her artistic direction
Borba said that seeing Beyoncé’s “Formation” during a difficult period in her development as a dancer helped her recognize what she believed art could communicate. She recalled that the video gave her a push: “This is art; this is what I believe in; this is what I want to convey as an artist.” The words are an English translation of her statement in the POPLine interview.
Her connection to Beyoncé was not limited to that one moment. In separate coverage, Gshow quoted Borba saying Beyoncé was one of the artists who inspired her when she started and continues to inspire her. Borba also said dance had brought opportunities she had not imagined, including awards and a chance to compete alongside artists, singers and actors at an awards event. That account is an example of what dance opened for her, not a complete career timeline.

The wider context of Beyoncé’s influence
POPLine’s 2023 article noted that Beyoncé had 32 Grammy Awards at the time and had not won Album of the Year. That is a time-specific figure reported by the interview article, not a current award count. For Borba, the significance of “Formation” in her story is more personal: she described it as helping her clarify the art she wanted to make.
