Beyoncé has said that Cowboy Carter grew out of an earlier experience in which she felt unwelcome, and that it prompted her to study country music’s history more deeply. She did not name the 2016 CMA Awards in that statement. But coverage has widely connected her remarks to her performance of “Daddy Lessons” with The Chicks at the ceremony—and the backlash that followed.
What happened at the 2016 CMA Awards
Beyoncé and The Chicks performed “Daddy Lessons” together at the 50th CMA Awards in 2016. Their appearance drew objections and backlash. PBS NewsHour reported in 2024 that the performance was removed from CMA online channels after the reaction; the Associated Press placed the episode in a broader debate about who is welcomed into country music.

That episode provides important context for Cowboy Carter, but it is important to distinguish the documented event from the later interpretation of its significance. Beyoncé’s 2024 statement referred to an earlier experience of feeling unwelcome; it did not explicitly identify the CMAs.
What Beyoncé said inspired the album
In March 2024, Beyoncé described Cowboy Carter as having been in the making for more than five years. She wrote, “This album has been over five years in the making,” and said it “was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t.” She added that the experience led her to “dive deeper into the history of Country music.” These are her descriptions of the album’s development and motivation, not an independently measured timeline.

News coverage connected the unwelcome experience to the 2016 CMA performance and its aftermath. That connection is a widely reported interpretation, rather than a specific identification in Beyoncé’s statement.
How Cowboy Carter expands the story
Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé’s eighth studio album, was released worldwide on March 29, 2024, according to Sony Music Canada. NPR reported that the 27-track project was framed by Parkwood Entertainment as a collection of songs, each representing its own reimagined Western-film experience. Films cited as inspirations included Five Fingers for Marseilles, Urban Cowboy, The Hateful Eight, Space Cowboys, The Harder They Fall and Killers of the Flower Moon.

- Shrink-wrapped
The album engages with country music while moving across genres. The Recording Academy’s overview describes country among the styles it explores, while Associated Press coverage situates it in the history of Black artists and the barriers they have faced in country music. That wider context matters: the album is not simply a response to one awards-show appearance. Beyoncé described a longer creative process that also involved deeper study of the genre’s history.

The 2016 performance and Cowboy Carter are linked in public discussion because Beyoncé’s later account of feeling unwelcome resonates with the backlash to her CMA appearance. The strongest version of the connection keeps both parts in view: the performance and its reception are reported events, while identifying them as the precise experience behind the album remains an interpretation of her remarks.

Seen in that light, Cowboy Carter sits within a larger conversation about country music’s history, genre boundaries and the place of Black artists in the genre. The album’s scope and its attention to that history make it more than a retelling of the CMAs episode.
