There is no public evidence of a messy blowup between Jesse Rutherford and Devon Lee Carlson. In a September 2022 podcast interview, Carlson described the end of a long public relationship as “the most mutual breakup ever” and said the former partners stayed friends and supportive. She did not name Rutherford in the quoted passage; later entertainment reporting identifies him as her former partner. That account speaks to how the breakup was described publicly, not how either person felt privately.

What Devon Lee Carlson said about the breakup

On the September 7, 2022 episode of Call Her Daddy, Carlson discussed the end of a long public relationship. She said, “we had the most mutual breakup ever,” and described the former partners as “totally chill and friends, and supportive of each other.” The episode listing confirms her appearance, while the quoted passage is available in a third-party transcript; the passage itself does not name her former partner. (Call Her Daddy episode listing; transcript excerpt.)

Later reporting identifies Rutherford as Carlson’s former partner. That makes it reasonable to connect her comments to their relationship, but the distinction matters: the publicly quoted words are about an unnamed ex, rather than a direct, named account of Rutherford and Carlson’s breakup.

What is known about their relationship and split

ELLE’s 2024 retrospective describes Carlson and Rutherford as having dated for about six years and says they had split by 2021. Those are retrospective reports, not a confirmed start date, exact separation date, or account of what happened between them. Coverage linked the breakup to November 2021 amid speculation, but that does not establish November as the date they separated. (ELLE relationship timeline.)

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
  • Billie Eilish's third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, released via Darkroom/Interscope Records is her most daring body of work to date, a diverse yet cohesive collection of songs - ideally listened to in its entirety from beginning to end - does exactly as the album title suggests; hits you hard and soft both lyrically and sonically, while bending genres and defying trends along the way

The reviewed reporting does not give a substantiated reason for the split or describe specific conflict. Interpretations of songs or social-media activity are not evidence of the couple’s private circumstances.

Was it painful or messy?

On the evidence available, the breakup was publicly characterized as mutual and friendly, not as a documented public fight. But “bad” can mean different things: Carlson’s comments describe the terms and post-breakup relationship as she presented them; they do not establish whether the separation was painless, emotionally difficult, or experienced identically by both people. No reliable account cited here measures that private impact.

How Billie Eilish fits into the timeline

Rutherford and Billie Eilish were publicly linked in October 2022, after the period in which Carlson and Rutherford were reported to have split. Eilish and Rutherford’s representatives said in May 2023 that their separation was amicable and that they remained good friends; they also denied cheating rumors. That statement concerns Eilish and Rutherford, not the earlier relationship with Carlson, and cannot explain how that earlier breakup unfolded. (Entertainment Tonight; Glamour relationship timeline.)

In August 2023, Eilish described Rutherford as a very good friend and “my homie forever” in an Instagram Q&A, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. That is Eilish’s description of her own post-breakup relationship with him, not evidence about Carlson’s experience. (Los Angeles Times.)
