Bad Bunny is Puerto Rican, not Dominican, and he does not have to be either Dominican or a spokesperson for Dominicans for me to feel recognized in his work. What reaches me is the way he makes Caribbean identity feel present and specific: rooted in a place, shaped by language and music, and still carried across borders.
Recognition does not require sameness
As a Dominican, I can recognize something in Bad Bunny’s work without claiming his experience as my own. His artistic identity is unmistakably Puerto Rican; Puerto Rico is not a stand-in for the Dominican Republic, and Caribbean people do not share one national history. The connection is more personal than that. His work gives cultural presence its full weight, rather than treating it as a detail to smooth away for a broader audience.

That matters in a world where Spanish-speaking people are often treated as one undifferentiated audience. Bad Bunny’s Puerto Rican Spanish and cultural references remain distinctly his. A 2024 Dazed profile notes that his way of speaking has sometimes been derided in the wider Spanish-speaking diaspora. The fact that a recognizable voice can be mocked for not conforming to a supposedly universal version of Spanish helps explain why its unapologetic presence can feel meaningful to listeners beyond Puerto Rico.
His love letter to Puerto Rico makes room for listeners far from home
In a 2025 conversation with Residente, Bad Bunny described DeBÍ TiRAR Más FOToS as a love letter to Puerto Rico and its music. The interview also reflects on why that attachment can resonate with people who have left home, or whose parents left. I do not hear that resonance as proof that our histories are identical. I hear an invitation to recognize how music can keep a relationship with home alive, even when home is elsewhere.

Bad Bunny put an important distinction plainly: “No es lo mismo irse a conocer, a crecer, a experimentar, que irse porque no tienes otra opción, irte porque no tienes cómo quedarte.” In English: “It is not the same to leave to see the world, grow, and have experiences as it is to leave because you have no other option, because you have no way to stay.” That distinction keeps the idea of diaspora honest. Travel, ambition, and a constrained decision to leave are not interchangeable experiences, even when all involve distance from home.
Feeling seen is not the same as being represented
Feeling seen by an artist does not mean he represents me. Bad Bunny’s work and public identity foreground Puerto Rican culture; CENTRO’s Hunter College symposium on his impact likewise places that impact within Puerto Rican society and debates about race, gender, language, and Latinidad. His engagement with Puerto Rican political concerns belongs to that context. As a Dominican listener, I can value the visibility without relabeling it as Dominican visibility.

- OASIS, the collaborative album between J Balvin and Bad Bunny, was released in 2019 and features the singles, "Que Pretendes," "La Cancion," "Yo Le Llego," and "Cuidao por Ahi
That boundary matters because Caribbean solidarity can become erasure if it treats distinct cultures as interchangeable. Recognition across borders is strongest when it leaves those borders visible: Puerto Rican music and history remain Puerto Rican; Dominican music and history remain Dominican. I can feel kinship without claiming ownership, and I can find something familiar without pretending it is exactly the same.
Dominican reactions are not one reaction
There has also been debate over the visibility of Dominican artists and musical history in Un Verano Sin Ti. Some Dominican listeners have reportedly criticized what they saw as insufficient attention. That criticism is worth acknowledging, but it cannot stand in for every Dominican listener or settle what the album means to each person. Acknowledging it alongside my own sense of recognition makes the response more honest: people can hear the same work differently, and neither response cancels the other.

One reported point of connection is Bad Bunny’s gratitude to the Dominican Republic, which a 2022 Listín Diario search result attributed to him as the first country to make him feel famous. That wording should be treated cautiously because the article page was not available for full verification. Even so, the broader possibility of an artistic relationship across Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic need not make either identity less distinct.

Bad Bunny makes me feel seen as a Dominican not by becoming Dominican, but by making Caribbean specificity visible enough for recognition to travel. I can hear a Puerto Rican artist speak from his own place and still feel the pull of language, belonging, and home. That connection is real as a listener’s response; it is not a claim that one artist can speak for every Dominican, or that Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are the same.
