Sound Workshop’s Otamatone modification borrows a defining Trautonium gesture: one finger controls pitch by position and expressive volume through pressure. In the reported build, the Otamatone’s sound passes through a low-pass filter, while a moving metal plate and two Hall-effect sensors translate finger movement into volume control. The project is an account of a design, not a complete build guide.
What changes in the Otamatone hack?
A stock Otamatone uses a touch-sensitive strip on its tail to change pitch; squeezing its head opens the mouth. Sound Workshop’s modification reroutes the instrument’s audio through a low-pass filter and changes the playing interface so the same finger action can affect pitch and volume.
As described in Hackaday’s April 10, 2026 report by Tyler August, the original Otamatone touch sensor is attached to a flexing metal plate. Two Hall-effect sensors detect the plate’s vertical movement, providing the volume-control signal. The circuit is described as analog, built from op-amps and passive components, without an Arduino.
How the controls work together
- Pitch: The player moves a finger along the Otamatone’s touch sensor.
- Volume: Pressure flexes the plate, and the Hall-effect sensors detect its movement.
- Timbre: The audio passes through a low-pass filter, which shapes the sound by reducing higher frequencies.
The result is a Trautonium-inspired control scheme, not a claim that the modified toy reproduces every feature of a historical Trautonium.

Why call it Trautonium-inspired?
Friedrich Trautwein conceived the Trautonium around 1929–1930. The Deutsches Museum describes its 1929 prototype as a resistance wire stretched above a metal rail: pressing the wire against the rail completed the control action, while finger position determined pitch. The instrument debuted at the New Music Berlin festival in 1930, according to the Deutsches Museum’s Trautonium overview.
The important connection is the playing gesture. The Vienna Museum of Technology explains that on the Trautonium, “The pressure also controls the volume,” while filters help produce different timbres (museum overview). The Otamatone hack adapts that combination of pitch position, pressure-sensitive dynamics and filtering to a very different instrument.

A modern ribbon controller offers a closer route to the same broad playing concept without modifying a toy. Doepfer’s A-198 Trautonium manual/ribbon controller uses a resistive wire over a conductive plate and supplies control voltage for synthesizer systems.
What is different from a stock Otamatone?
The distinction is not simply that the modified instrument has more settings. It changes how the player expresses a note. Official Otamatone materials describe the instrument family and its factory controls; the official FAQ says the Deluxe model adds volume and octave controls. It also describes three octave settings, with two to three preset octaves per setting, offering up to nine octaves across the settings.

| Instrument or approach | Pitch and dynamics | Sound shaping | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock Otamatone | Pitch from the tail touch sensor; Deluxe adds a volume control. | Factory voice and controls vary by model. | The first Otamatone was released in December 2009 by the Maywa Denki/CUBE project, according to the official history. The current official site lists multiple product categories, so features depend on the specific model (product categories). |
| Sound Workshop modification | Pitch sensor and pressure-responsive plate are played together; Hall-effect sensors detect plate movement for volume. | Otamatone audio is routed through a low-pass filter, with analog processing described as using op-amps and passive parts. | The Hackaday report does not establish polyphony, a measured pitch range, tuning accuracy or performance consistency. |
| Trautonium-style ribbon controller | A resistive wire and conductive surface provide a continuous position-based control; the Doepfer reference describes a controller for synthesizer systems. | Depends on the connected synthesizer. | The controller is a modern comparison, not the historical instrument itself. |
Is the project a build guide?
No. The published account explains the design concept, but does not supply a complete, independently verified schematic or bill of materials. It also does not specify exact Hall-effect sensor models, resistor and capacitor values, measured filter response, latency, tuning performance or durability. Those omissions matter: component choices and mechanical details can affect how the plate moves and how consistently the controls respond.
It is therefore best understood as a documented instrument-hacking project and a demonstration of an interface idea—not a guaranteed recipe. Anyone attempting a similar modification should expect to work out circuit values and mechanical construction rather than follow a fully specified set of instructions.

Who might prefer each approach?
- Keep an Otamatone stock if you want the commercial instrument and its model-specific factory controls without altering its case or electronics.
- Try the modification concept if you are interested in analog circuit building and want pressure-linked dynamics integrated with pitch control. The reported approach involves physical and electronic changes to the instrument.
- Consider a ribbon controller if you want a Trautonium-like continuous control surface for a compatible synthesizer without adapting an Otamatone.
