Ali Fumiko Whitney plays Melina in Netflix’s 2024 film Find Me Falling, and she learned Greek-Cypriot dialogue and four Greek songs for the role. She described a deliberate sequence: understand the translations, work on dialect pronunciation, then learn the melodies. Harry Connick Jr.’s music serves a separate story strand, tracing the fictional rocker John Allman’s career.

How did Ali Fumiko Whitney learn the Greek songs?

In a July 30, 2024 interview with The Nerds of Color, Whitney said she learned four Greek songs and Greek-Cypriot lines from scratch. She explained her approach this way: “My process involved learning the translations first so I could understand what I was singing or saying. Next was learning how to pronounce everything in a Greek-Cypriot dialect. Then, finally learning the melody of the songs and putting it all together.”

Starting with meaning gave Whitney context for both the spoken lines and the songs; pronunciation came next, before she brought the melodies into the performance. She called the work “definitely a challenge,” but said she fell in love with the songs and was proud of the effort she put into bringing Melina to life.

Who coached Whitney in Greek-Cypriot speech and singing?

Whitney said dialect coach Yiola Klitou worked with her for “3-4 weeks leading up to filming” and came to set for her major Greek-speaking scenes. She also credited Greek singing coach Julia Petrou with helping her learn about Greek music. The interview distinguishes the work: Klitou supported dialect preparation, while Petrou coached her in singing.

Which songs does Whitney sing with Harry Connick Jr.?

A July 23, 2024 NME soundtrack report lists songs from the film and performer credits, including “Stalia Stalia,” “Pefteis Se Lathoi,” “Alla Mou Len Ta Matia Sou,” “S’Agapo Giati Eisai Oraia,” “Careless Love” and “Find Me Falling.” Whitney is credited on several tracks, sometimes alongside Connick Jr.

That track list should not be mistaken for a definitive list of the four songs Whitney said she learned from scratch: her interview does not name those four. It does establish that she sings in the film and that some reported soundtrack credits are shared with Connick.

How does Connick Jr.’s music differ from Whitney’s performances?

The two musical strands have different jobs in the story. Whitney’s Greek-language performances belong to Melina and the film’s Cyprus setting. Connick’s original songs are associated with John Allman, the fictional rocker he plays.

Musical strand Performer and material Story role Release information established
Melina’s songs Ali Fumiko Whitney performs Greek songs; the soundtrack report lists solo and shared credits. Connected to Melina’s singing and her ties to Cyprus. NME reported soundtrack tracks and performer credits; the report does not establish a physical soundtrack release.
John Allman’s songs Harry Connick Jr. wrote two original songs for the film. “Girl on the Beach” evokes an early-career hit; “Find Me Falling” is the later, more melancholy song. Film Music Reporter reported a digital release of the title song; a physical album is not established.

In a Yahoo-published interview, Connick said writer-director Stelana Kliris asked for a song John would have written and sung in his early twenties; that became “Girl on the Beach.” He described “Find Me Falling” as more melancholy and poetic, and said its lyrics helped determine the film’s title.

Was “Find Me Falling” released as a song?

Film Music Reporter reported on July 19, 2024 that Marsalis Music released Connick’s title song digitally, with streaming and download availability through major services at that time. That report verifies a digital release then, not current availability in every country or a physical soundtrack product.

What did Whitney say about Melina?

Whitney connected learning the music to understanding her character. She described Melina as ambitious and outspoken, while emphasizing her attachment to her homeland and its people. “I was struck by Melina’s love and respect for her family and community,” Whitney said in the same interview. She also said Connick took her under his wing during filming and acted as a mentor and father figure.
