Alfa Anderson, one of Chic’s lead vocalists during the group’s peak years, died on December 17, 2024, aged 78. Nile Rodgers announced her death in a social-media tribute. The reports did not disclose a cause of death.
Who was Alfa Anderson?
Born Alfa Karlys Anderson in Augusta, Georgia, on September 7, 1946, Anderson was a singer whose work helped define Chic’s polished, dance-floor sound. She joined the group in 1977, initially as a background vocalist, and later shared lead duties with Luci Martin.

Anderson met Chic founders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards after singing on the 1978, Quincy Jones-produced soundtrack for The Wiz. When original lead singer Norma Jean Wright left in 1978, Anderson moved into a lead role alongside Martin. She was one of Chic’s lead voices, not the sole singer on every recording.
What did Alfa Anderson sing with Chic?
Anderson’s featured performances appear across several of Chic’s best-known recordings. On “Le Freak,” she was among the lead vocalists, alongside Luci Martin and Diva Gray. Her work also features on “Good Times” and “I Want Your Love.”

“Le Freak” became one of Chic’s signature recordings. The song entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2018; those honors recognized the recording, not Anderson individually.
What did Anderson do after Chic?
Chic first dissolved in 1983. Anderson continued performing, touring and recording with Luther Vandross, and worked as a session vocalist with other artists. In 1987, she left the road and studios to return to her education.

She earned a second master’s degree in educational leadership and went on to teach and become a principal at El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice in Brooklyn. Her career in education was a substantial second chapter after her years as a working singer.
Her later music
Anderson continued making music after stepping away from regular touring. She released the single “Former First Lady of Chic” in 2013, reunited with Chic on “I’ll Be There” in 2015, and released the solo album Music From My Heart in 2017. With her husband, Eluriel “Tinkr” Barfield, she also recorded spiritual music as Voices of Shalom.

Anderson described Chic’s enduring appeal in a PopMatters interview quoted by Rolling Stone: “They’re imbued with a spirit that is all-embracing and universal. Because there’s complexity in Chic’s music, it never goes out of date.” She added that its music “still makes you get up and dance no matter where you are,” and said she was “humbled and honored” to be part of its history and legacy.

Rodgers announced Anderson’s death in an Instagram post on December 17, 2024. In the tribute reproduced by Rolling Stone, he wrote, “Thank you for everything,” and described her as “Forever loved.” No cause of death was disclosed in the reports.
