Alex Garland’s Civil War imagines a near-future United States already torn by armed conflict, but it does not explain the war as a straightforward contest between familiar political camps. Instead, the 2024 film follows journalists traveling toward Washington, D.C., putting viewers alongside people trying to record a crisis whose origins and moral boundaries remain unsettled.
What is Alex Garland’s Civil War about?
Written and directed by Garland, Civil War is a fictional political thriller centered on a team of journalists making a dangerous journey through a country at war. The group includes veteran war photographer Lee, younger photographer Jessie, colleague Joel, and editor Sammy. Their goal of reaching Washington and the president gives the journey its direction; witnessing and documenting violence gives it much of its emotional weight. A24’s official film page describes the movie as a near-future America on the razor’s edge.
The film’s imagined political landscape includes a president who has taken a third term and abolished the FBI, while Texas and California form the “Western Forces” opposing him. These are elements of the movie’s fictional setting, not claims about present-day events. The story begins after the conflict is underway, so it is not a step-by-step account of how the United States reached that point.
Why doesn’t the movie explain how the war started?
The missing backstory is part of the film’s design. Garland leaves the conflict’s origins and the factions’ full political and moral claims unresolved. Rather than pause for a comprehensive account of who caused the war or which side is right, the movie restricts what viewers know to what its traveling reporters encounter. The Associated Press review and a CBS News interview with Garland and cast members, published April 7, 2024, both describe this deliberate uncertainty.

That choice changes the kind of question the film asks. It is less a map of competing platforms than an account of what it feels like to move through violence without a complete explanation. Viewers may disagree about what the conflict means precisely because the film does not supply a definitive political guide to it.
How does the journalists’ perspective shape the story?
Lee and Jessie offer contrasting experiences of war photography. Lee is a veteran who has recorded horrors but feels that bearing witness has not stopped the violence; Jessie is an ambitious novice learning what the work demands. Their different outlooks make the act of taking pictures more than a technical task: it carries emotional consequences and raises questions about what a reporter owes the people in front of the camera.

The Associated Press review emphasizes the trauma of reporting, the importance of witnessing, and the strain between impartiality and moral response. By staying with journalists rather than organizing the story around a military faction, Civil War makes the labor and ethical pressure of recording events central. The camera may preserve evidence, but the film does not suggest that documentation alone can undo what has happened.
Is Civil War a warning about the United States?
Garland described the film to CBS News as “a film about the product of polarization and division.” Kirsten Dunst, responding to whether the scenario could happen in the United States, said: “Hopefully not. But I do think it’s a warning. I do.” Those remarks establish how the director framed the theme and how one cast member interpreted it; they are not evidence that the film predicts a real conflict or that its fictional scenario is inevitable.

The film’s ambiguity also resists reducing its meaning to a single partisan lesson. Its fictional factions and unsettled origins invite viewers to consider how division can become violence, while leaving the specific political conclusions to interpretation. Garland also told CBS News: “And actually, we kind of know any healthy country needs journalists. It needs freedom of the press.” That statement aligns with the film’s attention to reporters’ ability to bear witness, even as it shows the personal costs and limits of doing so.
How long is the film, and what is its rating?
The Associated Press review lists a running time of 119 minutes and reproduces the Motion Picture Association’s R-rating description: “strong, violent content, bloody/disturbing images and language throughout.” That content warning is relevant for viewers deciding whether the film is suitable for them.

Where can you watch or buy Civil War?
A24’s film page links to digital viewing options and retailer pages, as well as DVD and Blu-ray purchase paths. Those links do not establish which streaming service currently carries the film, whether a particular physical edition is in stock, or its current price. Check the destination retailer or viewing service for current availability.
What did Civil War earn at the box office?
The Associated Press reported an estimated $25.7 million in North American ticket sales for the April 12–14, 2024 opening weekend, which it described at the time as a record opening for A24. The film opened on 3,838 U.S. and Canadian screens. AP also reported a $50 million production budget, excluding millions in marketing and promotion.
