Avatar: The Last Airbender never shows Aang’s death, and the official timeline does not give a date for it. Co-creator Bryan Konietzko said Aang’s 100 years in suspended animation used up some of his remaining Avatar lifespan. The available sources do not establish a specific cause of death or confirm the often-repeated claim that he died at 66.
How did Aang die?
The cited official timeline and creator comment do not specify how Aang died. They name no illness, injury, or other cause. His eventual death takes place outside the events shown in Avatar: The Last Airbender and is not explained in the timeline’s account of his later era.
Did being frozen for 100 years shorten Aang’s life?
Yes, according to co-creator Bryan Konietzko. In a 2010 interview about the next series, he said: “You gotta keep in mind that he was frozen in a state of suspended animation for 100 years, so he kind of burned up some of his extra Avatar time.” The comment links Aang’s reduced lifespan to his century in suspended animation, but does not specify a biological mechanism or quantify how much time he lost. Read the interview transcript.
Nickelodeon’s timeline document also says Aang spent 100 years in the ice. It says only one year passed between his emergence and the end of the Hundred Year War. That helps distinguish his time in suspended animation from the events after he returned; it does not supply his eventual age at death. See Nickelodeon’s timeline document.

When did Aang die?
No exact in-universe date is established in the cited official timeline. The timeline dates major events in Aang’s era and the later The Legend of Korra era, but those anchors do not identify when he died.
| Timeline marker | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| 9929 | Avatar Studios dates season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender to this year. |
| 9930 | Avatar Studios dates season three to this year; the Hundred Year War ends during Aang’s era. |
| 9931 | Avatar Studios dates the postwar comic The Promise to this year. |
| 10000 | Avatar Studios dates season one of The Legend of Korra to this year. Paramount separately describes the series as taking place 70 years after The Last Airbender. |
These dates place Aang’s life and later stories in context; none is given as his death date. The Paramount description is a broad sequel-era framing, not a more precise date for Aang’s death. View Avatar Studios’ timeline and Paramount’s series description.

How old was Aang when he died?
The cited sources do not confirm a numerical age at death. The commonly repeated age of 66 should therefore be treated as unconfirmed, not as an established fact from the timeline or Konietzko’s comment. Aang’s century in suspended animation also makes it important to distinguish biological age from years elapsed on the calendar; the sources cited here do not provide a confirmed figure for either at his death.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does The Promise explain Aang’s death?
No. Avatar Studios dates The Promise to 9931 and describes Aang and Zuko dealing with the Fire Nation colony question after the war. It offers context for Aang’s postwar life, but its timeline synopsis does not explain his death. Avatar Studios’ timeline lists the comic and its synopsis.
