The connection is plausible, not proven: the date and length of his Mysore employment are unknown, and no source here shows that he directly taught the musician who later taught Kadri Gopalnath.
Who was Ali Ben Sou Alle?
Ali Ben Sou Alle was the stage persona of Charles Jean-Baptiste Soualle, a French clarinetist and saxophonist. Stephen Cottrell’s 2018 study describes Soualle’s career in Paris and London before an extensive international tour. Soualle also performed on a modified saxophone he called the “turkophone.” Cottrell’s article in the Journal of the American Musical Instrument Society reconstructs his career using contemporary evidence and earlier scholarship.
The name and instrument are worth distinguishing: “Ali Ben Sou Alle” was his performing identity, while “turkophone” was his name for a modified saxophone. Neither fact, on its own, establishes that his performances were Indian classical music.
What is known about Soualle’s travels?
Soualle’s itinerary helps establish that he could have encountered musical institutions far from Europe, but it does not settle when he reached Mysore. Paul Wehage’s 2017 feature says his travels appear to have begun in 1851 and reports that he performed for Queen Victoria in October that year. Cottrell documents his journey through Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai in 1855–56; a Shanghai concert in September 1856 is among the events discussed in the study.

A contemporary Shanghai reviewer, quoted by Cottrell, praised the instrument’s wide range but criticized some notes’ tone and accuracy, calling it an imperfect instrument that might improve with familiarity. That is one reviewer’s period opinion, not a neutral technical verdict on the saxophone.
The University of Sydney’s Australharmony entry for Soualle gathers newspaper references and bibliography, including Cottrell’s study and a 2016 biography by Fabien Chouraki. It is a useful guide to the documentary trail; precise claims about Soualle’s route should be tied to the sources that document them.

How does Mysore enter the story?
Wehage’s feature connects Soualle with the Mysore palace band and asks when he worked for the Maharaja and for how long. It does not resolve either question. The feature notes that an English-style palace band was present at Chamaraja Wadiyar’s coronation in 1868, offering evidence of a later institutional setting in which the saxophone could have been played. That date is not evidence that Soualle himself was there then.
The proposed link is therefore a chain of possibility rather than a documented teacher-to-student genealogy: Soualle may have contributed to the saxophone’s presence in the palace band, but the exact path from his work to later Carnatic performance is not established.

What connects the palace band to Kadri Gopalnath?
Wehage reports that Kadri Gopalnath heard the palace band in the 1950s. According to the feature, Gopalnath’s father bought him a saxophone and arranged early lessons with Lakshmi Narasimhaiah, a saxophonist in the palace band. This account supplies a plausible bridge between the band tradition and Gopalnath’s later work, but it does not show that Soualle taught Narasimhaiah or otherwise directly instructed Gopalnath’s teacher.
How did the saxophone become part of Carnatic music?
Gopalnath is credited with pioneering the saxophone’s adaptation to Carnatic music. Darbar’s overview explains that the adaptation involved techniques such as fingering and embouchure to shape slides and ornamentation characteristic of the style. These later musical choices—not simply the presence of a saxophone in a 19th-century palace band—are what made the instrument work in a Carnatic context. Darbar’s overview of the saxophone in Carnatic music also identifies Gopalnath’s performance at its 2011 festival.

It is more accurate, then, to describe Soualle as a possible early contributor to the instrument’s presence in Mysore than as the person who introduced it to Indian classical music. The sources support a possible institutional prehistory; they credit Gopalnath with the later adaptation.

“Muslim convert” appears in the headline of Wehage’s 2017 feature, but the reviewed academic study and university archive do not independently establish a religious conversion. Without corroborating evidence, the detail should be treated as unverified rather than as a confirmed biographical fact.
