A Yahoo report about Smagala says she spent nearly two decades believing she would not find love again, then eventually did. The report’s available summary also identifies a daughter born after the attacks and says the family continues to share memories of Stanley. Finding a new relationship does not erase the first one
Smagala’s story is one family’s experience, not a timetable or expectation for other people who have lost a spouse. National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) survivor accounts offer separate examples of people forming new relationships while continuing to feel connected to the person who died. They are personal testimonies, not evidence that every bereaved spouse wants to date or remarry.
A widow’s words about identity and remarriage
In a survivor account in The Journey, Issue 53, Sonya Richter, wife of Brian Richter (2001-AR), wrote: “I will always be Brian’s wife/widow, even after becoming Tim’s wife.” Richter’s account describes hearing another survivor speak about moving forward, becoming engaged and remarrying. Grief can remain part of a later relationship
A separate survivor account in the NFFF’s May/June 2022 issue describes its author meeting firefighter Mike Carroll while decorating a memorial tree; he became her husband two years later. There is no universal timeline for love after loss
The experiences in these accounts differ, and none establishes a right time to begin a new relationship. A later marriage does not have to mean forgetting or replacing a spouse who died; likewise, choosing not to seek another relationship is not a failure to move forward.
