Spoilers through the end of ‘9-1-1’ season 9. Bobby Nash dies in season 8, episode 15, “Lab Rats,” after giving Chimney the only antiviral dose during a lab emergency. Season 9 follows the cost of that sacrifice: Athena faces life without her husband, the 118 adjusts to losing its captain, and Buck’s grief becomes part of his growth. Bobby appears in a season 9 flashback—but that is a memory, not a return to the present-day story.
How Bobby dies in ‘Lab Rats’
In the season 8 episode “Lab Rats,” a dangerous virus traps members of the 118 in a lab emergency. Bobby gives the sole antiviral dose to Chimney, then reveals that he is infected too. He stays behind and dies, saving Chimney. Peter Krause described Bobby’s choice to ABC News as: “He was willing to sacrifice himself so that others could see another day.” ABC News’ interview with Krause covers the actor’s reflections on the character and the episode.
Why the show chose to kill Bobby
Creator and showrunner Tim Minear said the death was a creative decision, not a request by Krause to leave. “Bobby is the most impactful character to kill … it made sense on every level,” Minear told TheWrap on April 17, 2025.
Minear also linked Bobby’s death to the suspense of future emergencies: “I needed a major character death if I wanted, going forward, for the audience to feel any kind of suspense or that there were real stakes involved in any of the cases.” He placed the death before the season 8 finale so the remaining episodes could stay with the characters as they grieved, rather than ending the season immediately after the loss. How season 9 follows Athena and the 118
Season 9 shifts from the immediate shock of Bobby’s death to the difficult adjustment that follows. ABC’s official synopsis for episode 4, “Reentry,” states: “Athena must confront what it means to live without Bobby.” That framing puts her bereavement at the center of the episode rather than treating Bobby’s death as a plot point the series can simply move past. ABC’s episode guide lists the season’s episodes through “Hearts and Flowers,” dated May 8, 2026.
Buck’s grief becomes part of his maturation
Oliver Stark, who plays Buck, described Bobby’s loss as a catalyst for his character’s development: “For me, the main thing is that the kind of gravitas of losing Bobby is used as a catalyst to mature Buck.” Stark and Aisha Hinds discussed season 9 character arcs in a TV Insider interview. The change is not a replacement for Bobby; it is one way the show lets his absence affect the people who remain.

Does Bobby come back in season 9?
Yes, in a flashback—not in the present-day story. TVLine reports that season 9, episode 4 shows Bobby and Athena on their first on-screen date, originally seen in the season 1 finale. The scene revisits their shared past; it does not establish that Bobby survived or returned to the 118. TVLine’s report on the flashback describes the appearance.
