House of the Dragon season 3 premiered in the United States on June 21, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Warner Bros. Discovery scheduled the eight-episode season to release weekly, with the finale on August 9, 2026. Those dates are now past, so season 3 is not waiting for a future U.S. release date.
The confirmed U.S. release schedule
| Milestone | Official U.S. detail |
|---|---|
| Premiere | June 21, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT |
| Episode count | Eight episodes |
| Release pattern | One new episode each week |
| Scheduled finale | August 9, 2026 |
HBO Max and Warner Bros. Discovery identify HBO and HBO Max as the U.S. outlets. Warner Bros. Discovery’s April 27, 2026 announcement said: “Season three of the HBO Original drama series HOUSE OF THE DRAGON debuts SUNDAY, JUNE 21 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.”
Why the “disappointing news” framing is out of date
There is no supported indication in the official U.S. announcements that season 3 remains delayed or lacks a date. The apparent bad news is instead a date mismatch: any page still presenting the season as an upcoming release is using information that predates the June 21 premiere. By September 27, 2026, both the announced premiere and the August 9 finale had passed.
Where the U.S. information places the show
The official U.S. material names HBO and HBO Max. HBO Max’s service information says seasons 1 and 2 are available there, while Warner Bros. Discovery announced season 3 for HBO and streaming on HBO Max. Catalog access, broadcast arrangements and dates can differ outside the United States, and the available information here does not establish current release details for other territories.

What season 3 is based on
Warner Bros. Discovery describes House of the Dragon as an adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, set about 200 years before Game of Thrones. The book is optional background reading; it is not a method for watching the television season.
Fire & Blood
Penguin Random House lists an Fire & Blood (HBO Tie-in Edition) by George R. R. Martin in paperback, mass-market paperback and hardcover formats. It presents the Targaryen history that supplies the show’s source material.
The Rise of the Dragon
The Rise of the Dragon, by George R. R. Martin, Elio M. García Jr. and Linda Antonsson, is a separate illustrated history of the Targaryen dynasty. It is an optional companion for readers who want a visual reference rather than another way to access the series.

What viewers should check now
- For the United States, look for season 3 in the HBO or HBO Max listings rather than a future premiere notice.
- Confirm your country’s local HBO partner or streaming catalog before relying on the U.S. dates.
- If you want the historical context behind the drama, choose Fire & Blood or, for an illustrated overview, The Rise of the Dragon.
