If you are looking for when it starts, the answer is that it already has. The “Westeros-sized update” in the headline refers to the season’s scale and production background, not to a new development after the premiere.

What the season is built on
Fire & Blood
HBO identifies George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood as the basis for the series. Reading the book is useful background for the Targaryen history the show draws on, but it is optional. HBO does not promise that the television adaptation follows every detail of the book, so treat the novel as context rather than a preview of episode plots.

The setting: about 200 years before Game of Thrones
HBO describes the story as following House Targaryen roughly 200 years before Game of Thrones. That gap explains why the season feels like a different era of Westeros: its political and dynastic conflicts are older than the events of the original series, and familiar names appear in earlier forms.
Production and cast
HBO’s March 31, 2025 announcement said production began in the United Kingdom and listed the season at eight episodes. The same announcement named the following cast:
- Tommy Flanagan as Lord Roderick Dustin, a new Season 3 cast member
- Dan Fogler as Ser Torrhen Manderly, a new Season 3 cast member
- James Norton as Ormund Hightower, among previously announced new cast
These are production-era facts. They explain how the season was assembled, but they are not evidence of anything that happened after the premiere.

HBO broadcasts the season on the HBO channel, and HBO Max is the streaming option. The two are separate access points, so confirm which one your subscription covers before the weekly episodes begin.
