Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 8, “The Queen Who Ever Was.” The finale ends with Daemon pledging his forces to Rhaenyra and Alicent offering her a path into King’s Landing at the cost of Aegon’s life. A montage shows armies and dragonriders preparing to converge, but the battle itself—and whether Alicent’s plan succeeds—remain unresolved.
What happens at the end of the finale?
In Episode 8, “The Queen Who Ever Was,” Daemon’s final vision changes how he sees his role in the struggle. He kneels to Rhaenyra and commits the forces he has gathered to her cause. Later, Alicent comes to Dragonstone with an offer: while Aemond is away, Rhaenyra may be able to take King’s Landing. Rhaenyra says securing her rule would require Aegon’s death, and Alicent accepts that price.
The closing montage shifts from those personal decisions to military preparations and people fleeing the capital, including Aegon and Larys. Its message is that the conflict is about to widen. It does not show Rhaenyra taking King’s Landing, Aegon being killed, or the opposing forces meeting. The official episode synopsis describes Rhaenyra looking to press her advantage as Aemond grows more volatile (Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom).
What did Daemon see, and why did he kneel?
Daemon has spent the season at Harrenhal pulled between his ambition and his loyalty to Rhaenyra. The vision connects the Targaryen struggle to the larger prophecy about a threat to the realm. Rather than treating himself as the central figure in the fight for power, he understands that he is part of a much larger story. He kneels and pledges his forces to Rhaenyra.

Director Geeta Vasant Patel said Daemon recognizes that “he’s part of something bigger than him —and he believes it.” Writer and executive producer Sara Hess connected the vision to the wider Game of Thrones story and Daenerys, a descendant of Daemon and Rhaenyra; co-creator Ryan Condal described Daemon as understanding that he is “not the player, but a piece on the board” (TV Insider; Sky). Those comments explain the scene’s intended meaning, but the episode does not spell out every future consequence of the vision.
What did Alicent offer Rhaenyra?
Alicent proposes that Rhaenyra take King’s Landing while Aemond is away, with Alicent and Helaena potentially able to help. When Rhaenyra makes clear that Aegon would have to die for her rule to be accepted, Alicent agrees. The offer signals how radically Alicent’s position has changed, but it is not proof that Aegon is already dead or that the city has fallen.

Nor does Alicent’s consent guarantee that the people, soldiers, and dragonriders involved will follow the plan. Patel described the scene as shifting the burden of leadership onto Rhaenyra: taking the throne may be possible, but she must reckon with the bloodshed it could require. Hess summarized the exchange as Rhaenyra saying, “I’m going to have to kill your son,” and Alicent acceding to it (Sky; TheWrap).
Why doesn’t the season end with a battle?
The montage builds anticipation by showing forces in motion rather than resolving their clash. The finale’s cliffhanger is the prospect of a larger war: the characters have made consequential choices, but the military outcome is still ahead. The Washington Post called the ending a dramatic setup for a delayed climax, while TheWrap describes armies and dragonriders moving toward King’s Landing (The Washington Post; TheWrap).

Patel said the finale deliberately centered Rhaenyra and Alicent’s emotional story, even after the previous episode raised expectations of a major battle. The quiet final images focus on the consequences of their decisions; the montage supplies the promise of action to come (TheWrap).

No. The finale’s meeting between Alicent and Rhaenyra is an original scene created for the television adaptation, not a scene taken from George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. TheWrap reports that both secret meetings between the two women in Season 2 were created for the show (TheWrap). The book provides background for the Dance of the Dragons, but it is not a script of the series, and this conversation should be understood as a show-specific choice.
