After the Greens return to King’s Landing with Meleys’s head on display, Aegon’s severe injuries and the question of who can govern turn the apparent victory into a political crisis.
What the Episode 5 teaser points to
Contemporary coverage published on July 8, 2024, reported that Max released the teaser after Episode 4 and described it as focused on the aftermath of Rook’s Rest. That broad framing is the reliable takeaway: the battle has ended, but its consequences are just beginning. Detailed claims about specific teaser shots or dialogue are not established here because the official teaser itself was not available for direct verification. Times of India’s July 8 report provides the contemporary account.
What happens after Rook’s Rest
The Greens bring the battle home
Criston Cole leads the army back to King’s Landing, where Meleys’s head is paraded through the streets. Sky’s episode synopsis describes the residents’ reaction as silent and says they regard the spectacle as an “abomination.” The public display is meant to signify a Green victory, but it also makes the cost of the battle impossible to ignore.
Rhaenys and Meleys are gone; Aegon is badly hurt
The Blacks have lost Rhaenys and her dragon, Meleys. Aegon, meanwhile, is found alive but badly burned and injured. Sky’s summary presents his survival as uncertain at that point in the story, leaving the Green side facing a crisis around a king who cannot readily exercise power.

Alicent fears for Aegon and questions Aemond
Alicent worries about Aegon’s condition and wonders whether Aemond is responsible. That uncertainty adds a private political cost to the Greens’ public display of triumph: the king’s condition and the possibility of internal responsibility complicate any simple account of victory. Sky’s Episode 5 page summarizes the episode’s central events.
Why the episode is titled “Regent”
The episode title frames the story around who exercises power while Aegon is incapacitated. It is a useful guide to the shift in focus from the battlefront to the question of rule, but the title alone does not establish the precise arrangements or decisions made in the episode.

How Episode 5 changes the pace
Episode 4 made Rook’s Rest a large-scale battle; Episode 5 turns toward grief, governance and political maneuvering. In a July 15 retrospective, The Ringer describes the episode as an emotional and political comedown. Its account notes no new dragon battle or on-screen deaths, with the climax built around a conversation instead. The change in scale is the point: the story moves from spectacle to the consequences that spectacle leaves behind.
