“A Son for a Son” is the first episode of House of the Dragon Season 2. Written by Ryan Condal and directed by Alan Taylor, it premiered in the United States on June 16, 2024, as the opening installment of the season’s eight episodes. Warner Bros. Discovery announced the season’s HBO and Max debut; the series adapts George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.
What happens in “A Son for a Son”?
Jacaerys seeks Northern support
The episode opens at the Wall, where Jacaerys Velaryon meets Cregan Stark. Jacaerys is seeking support for Rhaenyra as the conflict approaches open war. Their conversation invokes the Night’s Watch and the danger beyond the Wall, placing the immediate political struggle against a larger threat.
Rhaenyra demands Aemond
On Dragonstone, Rhaenyra searches the coast for signs of Lucerys and his dragon, Arrax, after their deaths at the end of Season 1. Her grief shapes the response she gives her council: “I want Aemond Targaryen.”

Daemon sees both revenge and military advantage in that demand. Aemond killed Lucerys, and he rides Vhagar, the largest dragon. Daemon offers Mysaria freedom in exchange for arranging access to the Red Keep, setting a clandestine plan in motion.
Aegon’s court is divided
In King’s Landing, Aegon hears petitions from smallfolk, including requests connected to lost sheep and advance payment for defensive work. Otto Hightower’s council is occupied with alliances and military positioning, while Larys Strong privately urges Aegon to remove Otto as Hand. The advice exposes a struggle for influence within the Green court even as the realm faces war.

Other tensions remain behind closed doors. Alicent and Criston Cole are carrying on a secret sexual relationship. Helaena’s anxiety about rats foreshadows the danger that will enter the palace.
Blood and Cheese kill Jaehaerys
Daemon’s mission is to kill Aemond. He recruits a disaffected guard and a ratcatcher, whose work gives him a way through the Red Keep’s service passages. But the pair cannot locate Aemond. They enter the room shared by Aegon and Helaena’s twins and force Helaena to identify the boy before killing Jaehaerys.

Helaena escapes with her daughter, Jaehaera, and reaches Alicent’s chambers. The episode closes with the consequence of Daemon’s retaliation: Jaehaerys is dead, Aemond is alive, and the Greens have suffered a personal loss that will deepen the conflict.
Who did Blood and Cheese kill, and who were they meant to kill?
In the television episode, Blood and Cheese kill Jaehaerys, the young son of Aegon and Helaena. Their intended target is Aemond. The distinction matters: the child’s murder is not presented as Daemon’s original objective, but as the outcome after the assassins fail to find Aemond.

Showrunner Ryan Condal explained that Aemond seemed the more plausible first target for Rhaenyra and Daemon: killing him would avenge Lucerys and remove Vhagar’s rider from the war. Condal put the strategic logic this way: “The more effective thing to do would be to kill Aemond and take Vhagar’s rider off the board, because that’s direct vengeance on the guy who did the crime in the first place, and it’s also a major strategic win because you disarm the biggest dragon in the world,” he told TV Guide.
The episode does not settle exactly what Daemon intended once Aemond could not be found. Condal said the show deliberately leaves Daemon’s pause after that possibility is raised unexplained; he suggested Daemon may have given a backup order. That uncertainty is part of the scene, rather than a confirmed account of Daemon’s instructions.

How does the episode differ from the book?
The show and George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood handle the “son for a son” mission differently. In the television version, Daemon’s stated target is Aemond, and Jaehaerys is killed after the assassins fail to find him. In the book account, the order is framed as “a son for a son,” and the assassins target one of Aegon’s sons.
The sequence and family setup also differ. In the book, the younger son Maelor is present; the television episode instead centers the twins, Jaehaerys and Jaehaera. The show’s scene makes Helaena identify which child will die, then follows her escape with Jaehaera and her report to Alicent. These are adaptation choices, not details to transfer from one version into the other.
For readers interested in the source, George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood covers the Targaryen history behind the series. The book goes beyond the events of this episode and therefore reveals later story material.
Why the premiere matters
The episode places the two sides in different kinds of uncertainty. Rhaenyra is grieving and seeking allies, while Daemon converts her demand for vengeance into a secret operation. In King’s Landing, Aegon’s public gestures do not erase the competing agendas around him: Otto is managing the war, Larys is maneuvering for influence, and Alicent and Criston conceal their relationship. The final killing makes the cost of that unstable response immediate for Helaena and the Green family.
