This guide covers dragons shown, named, or materially discussed through the Season 3 coverage published June 26, 2026. It separates current and former riders, wild dragons, and book-derived names so you can tell who is actually part of the television story at that point.
How to read the dragon list
The roster below is a season-aware guide, not an all-time count. “Shown” means the dragon appears in the series; “mentioned” means the show refers to it without introducing it on screen; “book-derived” identifies a name or association supplied by Fire & Blood rather than confirmed show dialogue. Rider order is chronological where a dragon has had more than one known rider. Status reflects reporting through the Season 3 guide dated June 26, 2026; future Season 4 developments are not established. GamesRadar+’s Season 3 roster provides the broader current list, while HBO’s official Dragon Index is selective and includes historical dragons.
House of the Dragon dragons and riders
| Dragon | Rider or association | Evidence in the series | Status through Season 3 coverage |

| Meleys | Rhaenys Targaryen | Shown | Dead after the Battle of Rook’s Rest. |
| Dreamfyre | Helaena Targaryen | Shown | Helaena’s dragon. The current guide says they have not been seen flying together. |

| Vermax | Jacaerys Velaryon | Shown | Jacaerys and Vermax are reported dead during the Battle of the Gullet. |
| Arrax | Lucerys Velaryon | Shown | Killed with Lucerys by Vhagar and Aemond over Storm’s End. |
| Tyraxes | Joffrey Velaryon | Mentioned; not introduced on screen | Daemon mentions the dragon. The show has not yet introduced Tyraxes on screen. |
| Moondancer | Baela Targaryen | Shown | Baela’s dragon; the current guide includes Moondancer in its account of the series. |
| Sunfyre | Aegon II Targaryen | Shown | Reported dead in the later Season 3 roster. This is a later status than Season 2 reporting, when his fate was uncertain. |
| Vermithor | King Jaehaerys I (former); Hugh Hammer (later) | Shown | Hugh claims Vermithor in Season 2; Jaehaerys is a historical former rider. |
| Sheepstealer | Rhaena Targaryen, according to Season 3 coverage | Shown / previously wild | The current guide reports that Rhaena claims the previously wild dragon in Season 3. |
| Stormcloud | Aegon III (book association) | Book-derived name; not confirmed in show dialogue | The current guide says the show has not referred to the hatchling by the book name Stormcloud. |
| Silverwing | Queen Alysanne (former); Ulf White (later) | Shown | Ulf claims Silverwing in Season 2; Alysanne was the earlier rider. |
| Tessarion | Daeron Targaryen | Shown | The current guide reports Tessarion with the Hightower forces. |
| Cannibal | No rider established | Wild dragon from book context | Known as a wild, unclaimed dragon from Fire & Blood; do not count it as an on-screen claimed mount. |
| Grey Ghost | No rider established | Wild dragon from book context | Known as a wild, unclaimed dragon from Fire & Blood; do not count it as an on-screen claimed mount. |
| Balerion | Historical dragon; no current rider in this story | Historical entry in HBO’s index | Appears in HBO’s selective index, but is not a current Season 3 dragon. |
Which dragons are dead, and which are still in play?
Reported dead by the Season 3 cutoff
- Arrax: killed with Lucerys by Vhagar and Aemond at Storm’s End.
- Vermax: reported dead with Jacaerys during the Battle of the Gullet.
- Meleys: reported dead after Rook’s Rest, where Rhaenys also died.
- Sunfyre: reported dead in the later guide. During the Season 2 finale period, Aegon said Sunfyre had died, but the account then noted that this was not fully confirmed.
The status here follows the later Season 3 guide, rather than treating Season 2 uncertainty as the final word. For context, TIME’s Season 2 finale guide records Aegon’s statement about Sunfyre alongside the uncertainty at that point.
Wild is not the same as riderless in a current faction
Cannibal and Grey Ghost are wild and have no established rider in the cited material. Sheepstealer’s status changes in the Season 3 reporting: it had been wild, and the guide says Rhaena claims it. These distinctions matter when comparing a wild dragon from book context with a mount shown serving one of the factions.

Why dragon totals vary by article
There is no single useful total unless you define what counts. A count of dragons shown on screen differs from one that includes names merely mentioned, wild dragons known from the book, or historical dragons such as Balerion. The current guide describes 15 dragons in the series and separately notes Tyraxes and two wild dragons as mentioned; its categories do not support collapsing all of those into one definitive active-dragon total.
Older counts are snapshots, not current series totals. A July 29, 2024 ComingSoon Season 2 guide said the Blacks had at least seven flying dragons after Addam, Hugh, and Ulf joined, while the Greens had three and Sunfyre was too wounded to fly. TIME’s Season 2 finale guide counted seven combat-age Black dragonriders and named Aemond/Vhagar, Helaena/Dreamfyre, and Daeron/Tessarion among the Greens. Those figures describe the story at their specific Season 2 cutoffs; they should not be carried forward as a Season 3 count.

What comes from the book rather than the show?
House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, but a book association is not automatically an on-screen fact. Stormcloud is a book name the current guide says has not been used by the show. Cannibal and Grey Ghost are wild dragons identified through book context, rather than dragons with established screen riders. Treat these differently from claims and pairings depicted or reported in the television series.
For source-history context, TIME quotes this line from Fire & Blood: “It is no easy thing for a man to be a dragonslayer. But dragons can kill dragons, and have.” It is book text, not dialogue from the HBO series. The book is optional further reading; the television adaptation can differ.

Season 1 events that explain the roster
The Season 1 ending, set around 132 AC according to The Ringer’s June 3, 2024 Season 2 primer, establishes a key pairing and status change: Aemond rides Vhagar, and the two kill Lucerys and Arrax over Storm’s End. Later events add new riders and deaths, which is why a static list without a season cutoff can mislead.
