When Aemond is named regent in House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 5, the camera stays on Alicent—not on the new ruler issuing orders. Director Clare Kilner said the choice came down to Olivia Cooke’s performance: “Behind those eyes there is so much going on.”
What Alicent is reacting to
The moment takes place in “Regent,” after the Battle at Rook’s Rest leaves King Aegon gravely injured and unable to rule. At the Small Council meeting, the members choose Aemond to govern in his place, passing over Alicent.
It is both a political and a family betrayal. The council’s decision reflects the limits placed on Alicent because she is a woman; meanwhile, she suspects Aemond helped cause Aegon’s catastrophic injuries. Gizmodo’s account reads her reaction as anger, insult, panic, and fear about what Aemond’s rule may bring. That is the report’s interpretation of the scene, not a list of emotions Kilner gave as a direct explanation.
Why the camera stays on Alicent
Kilner told TheWrap that she and her cinematographer considered how the scene would work as one long shot. They decided to keep it centered on Alicent rather than cut away to follow Aemond as he takes charge. “This would all be on Alicent. I could shoot this whole scene on Alicent,” Kilner said.

For Kilner, Cooke’s restrained reaction could carry the scene without dialogue or a cut to the person who had just gained power. “Behind those eyes there is so much going on,” she said. She also described the betrayal as becoming “so patently obvious.”
Gizmodo describes the room’s sound receding as the camera holds on Alicent, bringing her rapid breathing and heartbeat to the foreground. That sensory detail belongs to the report’s description of the scene; it is not a direct quotation from Kilner.

How the moment fits the episode’s wider theme
Kilner connected Alicent’s position to a broader pattern in the episode: women constrained by councils and political roles. Speaking about Alicent and Rhaenyra, she said, “They feel muffled.” She described the women as having their hands tied while rage and grief build and they look for ways to change their circumstances.
That framing makes Alicent’s silence more than a private reaction to Aemond’s appointment. Read alongside Kilner’s comments, it becomes a visual expression of political powerlessness and anger held in check: the council acts, while the camera makes the cost of being excluded visible on Alicent’s face.
