‘House of the Dragon’ Boss Explains Why Jon Snow Wasn’t in the Season 2 Finale

Ryan Condal said Daenerys was a stronger thematic link to Game of Thrones than Jon Snow because the connection the creators wanted centered on dragons and the dangers of power.

Jon Snow was considered as a possible link between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, but showrunner Ryan Condal said he would not have carried the same thematic impact as Daenerys. The creative team wanted a connection centered on dragons and the dangers of power; Daemon’s vision gives viewers that link without making Daemon understand the future he sees.

Why did Daemon see Daenerys instead of Jon Snow?

After the season 2 finale, Condal explained that the prequel needed to connect with Game of Thrones despite the vast span of time between the stories. As he put it, “there are really no characters that would be alive from our time period that exist in subsequent series,” so the team was looking for another kind of interconnection. Popverse reported Condal’s comments from a virtual press conference with journalists after the season ended.

Condal said the connection needed to reflect the stories’ shared themes. He described Game of Thrones, A Song of Ice and Fire and House of the Dragon as “warnings about the perils of power and people in power and absolute power.” For the specific bridge between the shows, he said, “The connectivity for us is specifically in and around dragons.”

Jon was another possible Targaryen figure to reference, but Condal said he would not have had the same thematic impact. That is his explanation for the creative choice, not a claim that Jon could never connect the stories in another way.

What the vision means—and what it does not confirm

Viewers recognize Daenerys in Daemon’s vision of the future; Daemon does not. Condal highlighted that gap: “We know who Daenerys is watching that image, but Daemon has no idea.” The image can therefore connect the prequel to the later series for the audience without giving Daemon knowledge of events far beyond his own time.

The explanation does not settle whether Daenerys or Jon is the Prince That Was Promised. Condal’s cited comments explain why the show chose Daenerys as a visual and thematic link, but they are not a definitive ruling on the prophecy.

The finale’s other major choice: postponing the Battle of the Gullet

The Daenerys vision was not the only choice that prompted questions about what the finale showed. The episode set up the Battle of the Gullet rather than depicting it. In comments reported by TV Guide, Condal said the production had to balance the story against available time and resources, while also considering where the series was headed. He said the battle needed the time and space it deserved and that the team wanted to build anticipation. In August 2024, he expected it early in season 3; that was a forecast at the time, not a current schedule.

Finale director Geeta Vasant Patel separately described the episode’s focus as Rhaenyra and Alicent and the dramatic story between them. She characterized centering those characters and their dramaturgy instead of delivering the expected war sequence as a deliberate creative choice, according to TV Insider. That helps explain the finale’s broader approach, but it is separate from Condal’s reason for choosing Daenerys over Jon.

The short answer

Condal said Daenerys better served the connection the creators wanted: one tied to dragons and to the series’ shared warnings about power. Jon was a possible alternative, but Condal did not think he would have made the same thematic impression. Daemon’s lack of recognition keeps the vision meaningful to viewers without turning it into a revelation for him.
