Patrick Cochrane fires into the crowd at Arthur’s political rally, but the episode cuts away before identifying his target or showing whether anyone was hit. Netflix has announced a second season, leaving the bullet’s destination as a cliffhanger.
What happens in the Season 1 finale?
At Arthur’s rally, his siblings Edward, Anne and Benjamin, along with Olivia, join him onstage despite the danger. Their appearance marks a moment of public solidarity, though it does not mean their disagreements have been settled.
Patrick slips into the crowd during a commotion, takes aim and fires. The episode ends without showing whom he targeted or what happened next. Sean Rafferty’s role as a protector heightens the tension: he is angry with Arthur after Arthur demanded that Olivia end their affair. The shot puts both Arthur’s safety and the family’s fragile alignment in doubt. Netflix Tudum’s finale explanation confirms that the outcome is left open.
Why do the family members stand with Arthur?
The siblings’ decision to appear with Arthur is a choice to support him publicly and, for that moment, the family’s shared legacy. Creator Steven Knight describes Edward as focused on the business, Arthur as having accepted the family project, Anne as wanting to do good work, and Benjamin as changeable. Actor Louis Partridge characterizes the group’s appearance as an act of solidarity.

That unity is temporary rather than a resolution of every conflict. The finale leaves romantic tensions in place and ends with the shot’s consequences unknown. Knight has said he wants viewers to wonder where the bullet will go.
What happened to the real Arthur Guinness?
The historical Arthur Guinness’s later life is separate from the fictional cliffhanger. TIME reports that he represented the brewery’s interests in Parliament for a year and died in 1915. That historical record does not establish whether the character is hit in the series.

House of Guinness draws on real people and events but is a dramatization, not a documentary record. For example, The Irish Times’ examination of fact and fiction reports that the show’s opening funeral riot differs from contemporary newspaper accounts and historian Kevin Egan’s description of the funeral as sombre.
The election storyline has a more specific historical basis. Netflix Tudum says Knight drew on Arthur’s real campaign for Parliament, including ballot-ticket and concealed-payment mechanics. In the series, Arthur wins, but the result is voided over bribery; the finale explanation says he was not considered personally responsible for the fraud. That historical inspiration does not make the show’s other relationships or acts of violence factual.

Is there a Season 2?
Netflix has announced Season 2. The announcement does not resolve the finale’s gunshot: Knight says he wants viewers to keep wondering where the bullet will go. Netflix Tudum’s Season 2 announcement leaves Arthur’s fate as an open question rather than confirming whether he survives the rally.
