Hot Tub, an adult-content browser developed by c1d3r, launched on February 3, 2025, through AltStore PAL—not Apple’s App Store. It became possible because Apple supports alternative app marketplaces in the European Union under rules introduced to comply with the Digital Markets Act. The familiar claim that it is the “first adult iPhone app” needs a caveat: adult and nude-content apps appeared in Apple’s App Store years earlier. Hot Tub’s significance is its route to iPhones as a dedicated pornography app through an alternative marketplace.
What Hot Tub is—and what “first” means
Hot Tub is a native iPhone app described by its developer as an adult-content browser. That is more precise than calling it a video-hosting service: the available description does not establish that Hot Tub itself hosts every video or page users can reach through it. Nor was it the first adult-themed app ever to appear on an iPhone. In 2009, Apple briefly allowed apps containing nudity, including Hottest Girls, before removing them. The more defensible description is that Hot Tub was the first widely reported dedicated pornography app made available on iPhones through an alternative marketplace in the EU. The original “coming to Europe” framing is now out of date: Hot Tub launched on February 3, 2025. “Europe” also overstates the geography. Why an app Apple would exclude can be installed
Apple’s App Store is not the only permitted route for distributing iPhone apps in the EU. In response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, Apple supports alternative marketplaces and certain other distribution methods. A marketplace can set its own catalog and content policies, subject to the applicable rules and Apple’s requirements for alternative distribution. That creates a route for an app that would not qualify for Apple’s own App Store.
Hot Tub was distributed through AltStore PAL, an alternative marketplace. This does not mean Apple listed or endorsed the app. Apple’s process for apps distributed outside its store is called notarization: a baseline review focused on platform integrity and security risks. AltStore PAL is also different from AltStore Classic. PAL is an alternative marketplace installed through its website; Classic is a separate sideloading route with different requirements, including a computer-dependent process. Who can install it?
Availability depends on more than the phone’s model or a change to an Apple Account setting. Apple’s alternative-distribution options are limited to eligible regions, and Apple’s guidance ties access to both the user’s physical location and Apple Account region. AltStore’s current download instructions specify a supported physical location, a corresponding account region, a supported browser, and iOS or iPadOS 18.0 or later for its current installation path. At a high level, Hot Tub’s documented path is to install a supported alternative marketplace, add Hot Tub’s source there, and install the app through that marketplace. Follow the marketplace and developer’s current instructions; exact screens and prompts may change with iOS updates. This is not a regular App Store download, and users outside the supported regions should not assume that changing their account country will bypass physical-location checks.
- If the marketplace is unavailable: check both your physical location and Apple Account region against current eligibility rules.
- If installation is blocked: verify that iOS meets the marketplace’s stated minimum and that you followed its current authorization prompts.
- If Hot Tub is missing from the marketplace: its source or availability may have changed. Check the developer’s and marketplace’s official instructions rather than using an unfamiliar download.
- If you remove the marketplace: apps installed through it may stop receiving updates or may be affected. Apple warns users to understand those consequences before deleting a marketplace. Apple’s consumer guidance
What notarization does—and does not—guarantee
Notarization is a narrower safety check than App Store review. It does not certify that every linked website is safe or lawful, verify every user’s age, guarantee the developer’s moderation, or establish that all content reachable through a browser is suitable for minors. Apple warns that alternative distribution can involve increased exposure to malware, scams, fraud, privacy risks, objectionable material, and weaker moderation protections. The marketplace and app developer are additional trust points, not interchangeable with Apple’s App Store review.

The available information does not establish a universal age-verification process for Hot Tub or for every external site it may open. Do not infer that the App Store’s age-rating and review practices apply in the same way. Users should assess privacy and content risks, and parents should not treat notarization or marketplace availability as proof that an app is appropriate for children.
Apple’s support for apps obtained outside its store is also more limited. If the marketplace is discontinued, an app is withdrawn, or an app stops working, updates and troubleshooting may depend on the marketplace or developer. Check their official status and installation pages before reinstalling or trusting a third-party download.

What the story says about iPhone distribution
Hot Tub is a visible example of a broader change: in eligible markets, Apple no longer controls every route through which iPhone apps can reach users. That can make room for apps Apple would reject under its App Store content rules, but it also shifts some responsibility for catalog decisions, moderation, and user support to alternative marketplaces and developers.
For a user who only wants to visit a website, a regular browser may avoid installing a separate marketplace. A Home Screen shortcut or web app may offer a simpler route, though its features can differ from a native app. Alternative marketplaces add another installation layer and its associated trade-offs. The right choice depends on the user’s region, comfort with that distribution model, and trust in the marketplace and developer—not on a claim that Apple has approved the app for its store.
