Spoilers for the full 2025 Netflix limited series Hostage. Alex is kidnapped by mercenaries led by Shagan, who seeks revenge on Prime Minister Abigail Dalton. But the abduction is also part of General Livingston’s wider plan to exploit the crisis and stage a coup. Here’s how the kidnapping, the rescue and the finale connect.
Who kidnapped Alex?
Shagan (Martin McCann) leads the masked mercenaries who abduct Alex (Ashley Thomas), a doctor distributing medicine and vaccinations in French Guiana. Their demand is that Abigail (Suranne Jones) resign as prime minister. At first, the kidnapping looks like a direct attempt to force Abigail out of office; later revelations show it is one piece of a broader political plot.

Shagan’s personal motive is revenge. His pregnant wife died after Abigail ordered British troops evacuated from Belize, and he holds Abigail responsible. That explains why he targets her family and government, but it is not the full reason the hostage operation takes place.
How does the kidnapping connect to the coup plot?
Livingston’s political objective
General Livingston is the senior military figure behind the larger scheme. He uses the state of emergency and Abigail’s political vulnerability to pursue a coup. Shagan’s revenge gives the operation a personal dimension, while Livingston’s goal is to overturn the government.

The insider and the false lead
Adrienne, an aide to French President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy), is identified as the insider helping the plot reach into Downing Street. Abigail’s chief of staff, Kofi, is implicated in insider trading, but that separate misconduct does not make him the mole.
How is Alex rescued?
Vivienne initially calls off a French raid after the kidnappers threaten to expose her past affair with her stepson, Matheo. She later reveals the affair herself, removing the blackmailers’ leverage. With that threat neutralized, French special operations forces rescue Alex. The choice leaves Vivienne exposed to her husband, a right-wing media mogul, but she stands by it.

What happens to Shagan and Abigail’s family?
Alex’s rescue does not end the danger. Shagan and Saskia later hold Abigail’s family hostage at a safe house. In the confrontation, Sylvie picks up a dropped gun and shoots Shagan.
Creator Matt Charman has said the moment is meant to bring relief that the threat is gone while also leaving unease about the violence’s effect on the family. The family survives, but the shooting carries a lasting emotional cost rather than functioning as a clean, consequence-free victory.

Why does Vivienne die, and what happens to Abigail?
A bombing at Downing Street kills Vivienne after she pushes Matheo out of harm’s way. Livingston’s coup effort is exposed, and Abigail is reinstated as prime minister.
In the time jump, Alex and Sylvie stand with Abigail at rebuilt Downing Street as she prepares to call a general election. The ending suggests that Abigail intends to face voters more honestly, with Vivienne’s example shaping her choices. That is a thematic reading of the finale, rather than a separate plot revelation.

What did the creator say about Abigail’s earlier decision?
Charman described the moral question at the heart of the series in Netflix Tudum’s August 23, 2025 ending explainer:
“What I wanted to do was create a really emotional, fraught, difficult situation that would make us as an audience wonder whether Abigail had done something wrong; could she have played this differently?”

The quote captures the show’s central tension: Abigail’s order to evacuate Belize is tied to Shagan’s loss, but the story asks viewers to consider the consequences of a political decision without reducing the entire crisis to his grievance.
