Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 opened in third place at the U.S. box office over June 28–30, 2024, earning $11,052,561. That was well below the $20 million–$40 million domestic opening range forecast before release. The film’s budget figures need a scope distinction: The Numbers lists $50 million for Chapter 1, while the Associated Press described a $100 million-plus production in the context of Costner’s larger, multi-chapter project.
What was Horizon’s opening weekend box office?
The Numbers and Box Office Mojo report a domestic opening of $11,052,561 for the June 28–30, 2024 weekend. Both list the film in third place and show an opening in 3,334 theaters. The Numbers’ film record and Box Office Mojo’s title page provide the box-office details.
How did the opening compare with the forecast?
Before the film opened, Boxoffice Pro forecast a domestic opening-weekend range of $20 million–$40 million, as of May 28, 2024. The actual $11,052,561 opening fell below even the low end of that forecast; the range was a pre-release estimate, not an observed result. Boxoffice Pro’s May 31 forecast also described the release as an unusual wide studio Western planned across four feature installments. Its then-planned August 2024 date for Chapter 2 is historical context, not confirmation of the later installment’s current status.
Which budget figure applies to Chapter 1?
The Numbers lists a $50 million production budget for Chapter 1. That is the database’s film-specific listing, rather than an independently established final cost. The Numbers’ page is the source for that figure.

A separate figure often associated with the project requires more care. In a May 2024 report, the Associated Press described a “$100 million-plus production” while discussing Costner’s financing of the multi-chapter undertaking. The AP did not establish that this was Chapter 1’s standalone budget. The two reports therefore have different stated scopes and should not be treated as conflicting estimates of one clearly defined cost. The AP report also gave June 28, 2024, as Chapter One’s theatrical date and August 16, 2024, as Chapter Two’s then-planned date.
Does the opening prove the film lost money?
No. The $11 million figure is the film’s domestic opening-weekend gross, not its profit or final financial result. Box Office Mojo lists a worldwide gross of $38,835,702 on the accessed page, but a gross total alone does not establish net returns. The cited sources do not provide the marketing spend, distribution terms, participant payments, or complete project accounting needed to determine profitability or a break-even point.
