Hollywood’s Fake Watches: Kill Bill’s Daytona Lookalike and Drive’s Patek-Style Prop

The watch in Kill Bill is described as an inaccurate Daytona-style lookalike. Drive’s Patek Philippe-inspired watch was a custom prop, and its prop master explained why the production used replicas.

Neither watch was an ordinary, authentic retail model: the watch in Kill Bill: Volume 2 is described as a visibly inaccurate Daytona-style imitation, while Ryan Gosling’s watch in Drive was a custom Patek Philippe-inspired prop that the film’s prop master said was not a real Patek model. The distinction matters: one looks like a mistaken copy of a known design; the other was made to serve the character and the production.

Two different kinds of Hollywood “fake”

Calling both watches “fake” is convenient shorthand, not proof that either film tried to pass a prop off as merchandise. The available accounts describe two different situations: a Daytona-style watch with visible design errors in Kill Bill: Volume 2, and a Patek Philippe-styled watch made for Drive that was not an actual Patek model.

Film What the watch was What the reporting establishes
Kill Bill: Volume 2 A Daytona-style lookalike Time+Tide’s 2020 visual assessment points to an upside-down tachymeter scale and subdials that do not match a real Daytona layout. No production-team confirmation is established in the reporting cited here.
Drive A custom Patek Philippe-inspired prop Prop master Will Blount told British GQ it was not a real Patek Philippe model. He said the production used five or six replicas because of the stunt work and the risk of damaging a valuable watch.

What is wrong with the Daytona-style watch in Kill Bill: Volume 2?

Time+Tide identifies Uma Thurman’s character’s watch as a Daytona-style fake and flags two visible mismatches with a Rolex Daytona. Its article describes the tachymeter scale as upside down and the subdials as arranged for day, date and 24-hour indications rather than the Daytona’s hours, minutes and seconds.

That is a specialist publication’s visual assessment, not an authenticated account from the film’s prop team. The evidence does not establish why the watch was used, whether its inaccuracies were deliberate, or whether it was made for sale as a counterfeit. The safe conclusion is narrower: the watch on screen has been reported as a Daytona lookalike with details that do not match the genuine design.

Was Ryan Gosling’s watch in Drive a real Patek Philippe?

No. Will Blount, the film’s prop master, told British GQ that the watch was not a real model offered by Patek Philippe. The design direction was a Patek Philippe, chosen with Gosling’s input; Time+Tide describes the prop as vintage-looking, with a stainless-steel case, a six-o’clock subdial and a brown leather strap.

Blount said the watch mattered to the character as an inherited possession. He also explained why the production used replicas: “You can’t use the real watch or you’re going to break it,” he told GQ. “Which would just be a shame. So we used five or six replicas.” That count is Blount’s account of this film’s production, not a general rule about how many watches a film uses.

Time+Tide likewise says the chronograph design was unlike anything Patek Philippe actually offered. Since the prop was not a real model, it should not be assigned a Patek reference number or treated as an exact retail watch viewers can buy.

Why a film production might use replicas or multiples

A watch worn during filming has to work as an object on set, not just as a luxury product. Stunts, repeated takes and handling create a risk of damage; continuity may also require matching props across scenes. In the Drive case, Blount explicitly cited stunts and the chance of breaking a valuable watch as the reason for using replicas.

Hodinkee’s interview with property master Ritchie Kremer discusses the broader practical role of props and the use of multiple watches when one could break or a stunt performer needs a matching item. That context helps explain why a production might choose a replica, but it does not mean every watch seen in a film is fake. A recognizable brand-like appearance alone cannot establish whether the item was an authentic retail model, a modified watch or a purpose-built prop.

How strong is the evidence for each identification?

The two identifications do not rest on the same kind of evidence. For Drive, the key point comes from a direct interview with prop master Will Blount: he said the watch was not a real Patek Philippe model and described the production’s use of replicas. For Kill Bill: Volume 2, the cited source is Time+Tide’s comparison of the on-screen watch with a Daytona; no corresponding explanation from the film’s production team is established.

That difference should shape how confidently the props are described. Blount’s interview supports a production-specific account of why the Drive watch was made and duplicated. The Kill Bill details are best presented as a reported visual mismatch, without guessing at the filmmakers’ intent.
