In Jade Jurewicz’s September 2022 review, Hinata stood out for homestyle Japanese food served in a relaxed, unconventional arts-centre setting. The visit also came with a long wait and mixed results across the dishes. The review is a record of one meal, not confirmation of the cafe’s current status or offerings.
What was Hinata like?
Jurewicz reviewed Hinata Cafe for PerthNow on 8 September 2022, based on a visit the preceding weekend. She called it a wholesome eatery serving Japanese flavours in a homely, abundant style, writing: “This wholesome eatery is unlike anything I’ve experienced in Perth, in such a lovely way.” That is her personal assessment, not a verified comparison with other Perth restaurants.
The cafe occupied a level of the Fremantle Fibonacci Centre, described in the review as a large studio and performance space. Mismatched furniture, couches and cushions gave the dining area a casual feel, while performers nearby were building props. Customers took a menu, ordered at the counter and collected chopsticks.
What food did the review cover?
Hinata brunch set
The home-style set was described as changing fortnightly. Its format included vegetable miso soup, brown rice, two protein dishes and three vegetables. Jurewicz’s plate had chicken yakitori, bean curd karaage, broccoli with tuna and egg, beetroot and green salad, followed by a small dessert of sweet red beans, mochi and soy powder.

She especially liked the miso soup, which included potato, carrot and tofu, and the crunchy bean-curd karaage. She found the broccoli with tuna under-seasoned and the dessert too sweet.
Savoury Japanese pancake
The vegetarian pancake contained spring onion, carrots and cabbage, and was topped with Japanese mayonnaise, bonito flakes, pickled red ginger and aonori. It came with two sides. Jurewicz found it thick and flavourful, though slightly undercooked in the centre.

How long was the wait, and where was the cafe?
Staff warned that food could take up to an hour. The meals arrived about 50 minutes after ordering on Jurewicz’s visit, so that timing describes one reported experience rather than a standard wait.
