In her 2017 campaign memoir What Happened, Hillary Rodham Clinton described her marriage to Bill Clinton as a consequential choice she would make again—even as she acknowledged periods of serious doubt. Her account, published in a first-person excerpt and contemporaneous reporting, is her own description of the relationship, not a complete record of the couple’s private motives.
Clinton said she would choose the marriage again
In a September 10, 2017, excerpt from What Happened published by Vogue, Clinton called her marriage to Bill Clinton “the most consequential decision of my life.” She wrote that she turned down his first two proposals and accepted the third: “And I’d do it again.”
She connected that decision to their family life and wrote affectionately about her husband, saying she loved him “with my whole heart.” Those are Clinton’s words in the memoir excerpt; they should be understood as her account rather than an outside assessment of the marriage.
Her memoir also describes real doubt
The marriage was not presented as free of strain. In its September 6, 2017, coverage of What Happened, The Guardian reported Clinton’s admission that there were times she was deeply unsure whether the marriage could or should survive. She described asking herself whether she still loved her husband and whether she could remain without becoming unrecognizable to herself. Her answer, as reported, was yes.

The same report summarized her view that the marriage had many more happy days than sad or angry ones. That balance is part of how Clinton framed her experience; it does not erase the doubts she also disclosed.
The earlier context: the Lewinsky scandal and counseling
What Clinton recounted in Living History
The crisis predated What Happened. In her 2003 memoir Living History, Clinton described Bill Clinton initially denying allegations about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, then admitting on August 15, 1998, that there was truth to them. A CBS News report by the Associated Press recounted her shock, anger, tears and disappointment, as well as a period when the couple were emotionally distant. It also reported her account that her Senate campaign helped them find a way to talk about something beyond their relationship. This is the earlier memoir’s account, not a new disclosure in What Happened.
What she said publicly about counseling
In a June 16, 2003, interview with Nancy Gibbs for TIME, Clinton said that she and her husband spent a lot of time in counseling after August 1998 and that she found it helpful. She declined to share the details, saying she wanted that process to remain private.

Taken together, Clinton’s statements describe affection and commitment alongside anger, distance and periods of uncertainty. They document what she chose to say in a memoir excerpt, an earlier memoir and a 2003 interview. They do not establish the couple’s full private motivations or settle outside theories about why the marriage continued.
