It follows two young missionaries who arrive at the home of Mr. Reed and find themselves drawn into a dangerous game. Here’s who made it, what the filmmakers say about its story and tone, and how to check current viewing and disc options.
What is Heretic about?
Two young missionaries knock on the wrong door and meet Mr. Reed, played by Hugh Grant. What begins as an encounter with a seemingly welcoming homeowner turns into a deadly game. That is the spoiler-free premise given by A24.
The story brings religious belief and debate into a horror setup. In an A24 note dated November 8, 2024, writers and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods said they developed the film from questions about belief, God, and death, as well as an unsettling door-to-door encounter during location scouting in Iowa. They described discomfort, religious questions, thrills, and humor as elements they wanted to put together; this is their account of their creative intent.
Who stars in and made the film?
Hugh Grant plays Mr. Reed, with Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as the two missionaries. A24 identifies Beck and Woods as the writers and directors and names the three actors as the stars. The filmmakers’ official film page also lists A24 as distributor.

An Associated Press interview from November 2024 describes Reed as initially charming before he tests the missionaries’ faith through theological debate and the danger escalates. Grant called the role challenging and said the Jar Jar Binks impression in the film was probably his idea.
What kind of horror is it?
The setup puts conversation and religious debate alongside escalating danger. Beck and Woods wrote in their A24 note, “We’ve imbued every scene of Heretic with this discomfort, running in tandem with an exploration of religion.” At a Directors Guild of America Q&A dated November 25, 2024, Beck described balancing dread with levity and debate as a central tonal challenge. The film is therefore not presented by its filmmakers as unbroken suspense: their stated approach mixes discomfort with moments of humor and argument.
