Keanu Reeves said in a 2005 interview that he smoked. In a 2001 Vanity Fair profile, he said, “I don’t consider smoking a vice.” Both are historical remarks; they do not establish his current smoking status.
What Keanu Reeves said in 2005
In a February 2005 interview with Todd Gilchrist for blackfilm.com about Constantine, Reeves was asked how much he had smoked for the role. He answered, “Too much,” then explained that smoking was a character trait for Constantine and “a kind of tool to help him numb himself.” When asked directly, “DO YOU SMOKE?”, Reeves replied, “Yeah, I do.”
The comment about cigarettes helping someone numb himself described Constantine, the fictional character. It was not a claim about Reeves’s own motive, nor a health recommendation.
His 2001 remark about smoking
A February 2001 Vanity Fair profile quoted Reeves saying, “I don’t consider smoking a vice.” That is the wording attributed to him in the profile; it should be read as a remark from that time, not as a statement of his current views.

What later profiles reported
An interview about A Scanner Darkly included Reeves’s response, “This one I don’t mind, no,” to a question about cigarettes. Its publication date is not confirmed in the available record, so it cannot be placed reliably in a timeline. The accompanying narrative says he took a cigarette from a Camel pack and lit it; that is the interviewer’s description, not part of Reeves’s quote.
In a 2021 Guardian profile, the journalist described seeing Reeves smoke an American Spirit Blue. That is a reporter’s observation, not a direct statement by Reeves, and it does not establish his present smoking status.

The direct statements document what Reeves said in interviews in 2001 and 2005. The later accounts add an interviewer’s narrative and a journalist’s 2021 observation. Taken together, they do not establish how often he smoked, whether he tried to quit, or whether he smokes now.
