There are two released films in the Sicario series, and they should be watched in release order. Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario arrived first in 2015, followed by Stefano Sollima’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado in 2018.
The films share characters and a larger conflict involving cartel violence, U.S. covert operations, and the Mexico–United States border. However, the second movie is not a direct continuation of every storyline from the first: it moves the focus away from FBI agent Kate Macer and toward Matt Graver and Alejandro Gillick.

How many Sicario movies are there?
As of August 9, 2026, two Sicario feature films have been released:
- Sicario (2015)
- Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
The release order is also the best viewing order. The first film introduces the central characters and the morally compromised world they inhabit. The sequel assumes familiarity with that world while expanding the roles of Graver and Alejandro.

1. Sicario (2015)
U.S. release date: September 18, 2015
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Writer: Taylor Sheridan
Key cast: Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jon Bernthal, Victor Garber, and Daniel Kaluuya
The first film follows FBI agent Kate Macer, played by Emily Blunt, after she is recruited into a covert task force targeting a powerful Mexican drug cartel. Josh Brolin plays Matt Graver, the operation’s confident and deliberately opaque leader, while Benicio del Toro plays Alejandro Gillick, a mysterious consultant whose motives gradually become central to the story.
Rather than presenting the operation as a conventional law-enforcement mission, the film places Kate inside a system where official rules and unofficial objectives repeatedly collide. Its tension comes as much from uncertainty and withheld information as from the cartel investigation itself.
Sicario establishes the relationships between Kate, Graver, and Alejandro. It is also the entry most closely associated with Villeneuve’s controlled visual style and the film’s bleak examination of the border conflict. Watching it first gives the sequel’s returning characters their necessary context.

2. Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
U.S. release date: June 29, 2018
Director: Stefano Sollima
Writer: Taylor Sheridan
Returning leads: Benicio del Toro as Alejandro and Josh Brolin as Matt Graver
Additional cast: Isabela Merced, Jeffrey Donovan, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener
The sequel shifts its attention to Graver and Alejandro. After cartels are accused of trafficking terrorists across the U.S. border, Graver recruits Alejandro for an operation designed to provoke a war between Mexican cartels. The plan takes a dangerous turn when Alejandro kidnaps the daughter of a cartel kingpin and her safety becomes a direct concern.
Isabela Merced plays the kidnapped girl, while the story tests the limits of the operation’s stated purpose. The result is a more character-driven continuation of the first film’s conflict, with Alejandro’s history and Graver’s tactics pushed further into the foreground.
In the United States, the official title is Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Some international listings use Sicario 2: Soldado. Those are two titles for the same sequel, not separate films.

Yes. Watch Sicario (2015) first, then Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018).
| Viewing order | Film | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sicario (2015) | Introduces Kate Macer, Matt Graver, and Alejandro Gillick. |
| 2 | Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018) | Continues the world through Graver and Alejandro’s story. |
The sequel can be understood on its own as a separate cartel thriller, but watching the original first makes the returning characters’ choices and loyalties more meaningful. There is no need to rearrange the films into a different chronological sequence.
Is Sicario 3 happening?
A third film has been discussed under the working title Sicario: Capos, but it has not been released and does not have an announced release date.
The project remains in development. In October 2023, producers Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill said they hoped to reunite Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin, while noting that the writers’ strike had delayed the latest draft. In April 2024, Brolin said the project was getting closer, but confirmed that Christopher McQuarrie was no longer involved and said he did not know whether Taylor Sheridan remained attached. In November 2025, Brolin said the film still existed in development but that he did not know when it would be made.

That means Sicario: Capos should not be added to a current watchlist as though it were an available third entry. No release year has been confirmed, and there is no officially released third-film trailer. Online videos presented as Sicario 3 trailers may be fan-made or AI-generated.
Denis Villeneuve is not returning to direct the proposed third film. He has said he would not be involved, so reports describing him as the director of Sicario 3 are inaccurate.
