After discovering it at the 1988 Consumer Electronics Show, he licensed Japanese rights, then traveled to Moscow in 1989 to negotiate handheld distribution rights with the Soviet organization ELORG for Nintendo’s Game Boy. That negotiation helped bring Tetris to a defining new audience—and began a lasting relationship with its creator, Alexey Pajitnov.
Before Tetris, Rogers was already a game publisher in Japan
Rogers had built a career in Japan before he encountered Tetris. He founded Bullet-Proof Software and developed and published The Black Onyx, which the Tetris corporate biography says became Japan’s number-one game in 1984. That background mattered: Rogers was not approaching Tetris as an unknown property, but as a publisher who understood the Japanese market and how to bring a game to different platforms.
In 1988, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Rogers discovered Tetris. He licensed rights for Japan and published versions for several personal computer platforms and Nintendo Famicom. The puzzle’s appeal was immediately legible to him beyond any one machine or market. (Sources: Rogers’s official biography; Tetris corporate biography.)
Why the Game Boy rights mattered
Tetris’s licensing history involved distinct rights for different platforms and markets. Rogers’s 1989 trip to Moscow was specifically about handheld distribution rights—not a blanket claim to every version of Tetris everywhere. The Game Boy offered a way to put the game in players’ hands as a portable experience, a natural fit for a puzzle that could be played in short sessions.

A 2025 federal court opinion, summarizing the account in Rogers’s book, says Rogers proposed Tetris as a Game Boy pack-in to help the system appeal to a broader audience. That detail should be understood as the court’s description of the book’s account, rather than a substitute for the memoir itself. Read the court opinion.
The Moscow negotiation with ELORG
Rogers traveled to Moscow in 1989 and negotiated with ELORG, the Soviet organization responsible for importing and exporting computer software. Rogers’s biography describes ELORG as the agent for the USSR Academy of Sciences’ Computing Center, which held a license from Pajitnov. Rogers secured Game Boy distribution rights from ELORG; the Tetris corporate biography says he subsequently licensed those rights to Nintendo.

Rogers met Pajitnov during that trip. The encounter was not the end of their connection: their personal relationship continued, and they later formed a business relationship tied to The Tetris Company. In 1995 and 1996, respectively, Blue Planet Software and The Tetris Company were founded after the Computing Center license expired and ELORG asserted control, according to Rogers’s timeline. The Tetris corporate biography describes The Tetris Company as the exclusive source of Tetris licenses.
The distinction between rights is central to the story. Rogers’s Japanese licenses and his Moscow agreement over handheld distribution were stages in a complicated licensing history, not one all-encompassing transfer of Tetris. Rogers’s timeline and the Tetris corporate biography outline the roles of the parties.

How accurate is the movie Tetris?
Apple describes its 2023 film Tetris as based on the true story of Rogers and Pajitnov and frames it as a Cold War-era thriller. “Based on a true story” signals a connection to real events, not a promise that every scene happened as shown. The film was released on March 31, 2023, according to Apple’s press page.
Screenwriter Noah Pink addressed that distinction in a PBS NewsHour interview. He said, “Some of, you know, the external antagonism that is introduced in the movie is a little bit of a fabrication on top of the reality.” Pink said the aim was to preserve emotional truth, particularly for the characters. His comment specifically concerns some of the movie’s external antagonism; it does not establish that every dramatic change was the same kind of invention. Watch the PBS NewsHour interview.

What Rogers’s memoir adds—and what it represents
Rogers’s memoir, The Perfect Game: Tetris: From Russia with Love, offers his own fuller account of his life and the events around Tetris. The official announcement says it covers his life, The Black Onyx, the Tetris rights journey, and his sustainability work. Rogers described his aim as offering readers “an honest, non-Hollywood perspective on my life story.” That is his stated purpose for the book, not an independent judgment about its accuracy. Read the official announcement.
In a 2025 interview, Rogers said he did not recognize some scenes when he read the film script and explained that he wanted to set down his perspective beyond the movie. A memoir can supply that first-person perspective, but it remains one participant’s recollection rather than neutral adjudication of every licensing dispute or film alteration. GamesBeat’s interview with Rogers discusses his reasons for writing it.
