Gabimaru loses his memories after overusing Qi, also called Tao. The episode synopsis links that overuse to both his memory loss and a severe weakening that leaves him less sharp in battle. His memories remain absent in episode 15 and have returned by episode 16, though the summaries do not explain exactly how they come back.
What causes Gabimaru’s memory loss?
The season-two episode 14 synopsis attributes Gabimaru’s memory loss to overusing Qi (Tao). It also says he is severely weakened and that his movements lack their usual sharpness. The synopsis does not identify an outside attack as the cause or explain the precise internal mechanism.

This is a plot consequence of overuse, not evidence that his memories were false. In particular, the memory-loss event alone does not establish anything about whether Yui is real or whether the village chief fabricated Gabimaru’s past.
Does Gabimaru get his memories back?
Yes. The episode summaries establish the sequence: his memories have not returned in episode 15, but they have returned by episode 16. Those summaries confirm the outcome, not a specific cure or a single person, conversation, memory, or training event that causes the recovery.

What the memory-loss scene means for the story
The memory loss temporarily changes the balance between Gabimaru’s formidable fighting ability and the personal history that drives him. The official VIZ series overview describes the broader premise as Gabimaru’s attempt to retrieve the Elixir of Life and regain his freedom; it does not settle the Yui or memory-dispute questions. The episode synopsis should therefore be read narrowly: it gives Tao overuse as the trigger, without resolving those larger questions.
Director Kaori Makita has also discussed the moment as an adaptation choice. In a Crunchyroll interview, she cited “the part where Gabimaru loses his memory” while describing how the team built toward it during the screenwriting phase, noting that season two begins with him in that state. That is a production comment, not an explanation of the in-universe cause.
