Heather Mack was sentenced to 26 years in U.S. federal prison on January 17, 2024, after pleading guilty to conspiring to kill her mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, while the family was vacationing in Bali. The U.S. case is separate from Mack’s earlier Indonesian conviction: she had received a 10-year sentence there and served seven years. Tommy Schaefer, who was convicted alongside her in Indonesia, returned to the United States in 2026 to face federal charges that remain pending.
What the 26-year sentence covers
Mack pleaded guilty on June 16, 2023, to one federal count of conspiracy to kill a U.S. national. The U.S. Department of Justice says the killing occurred on August 12, 2014, in a Bali hotel room. The 26-year term imposed in Chicago on January 17, 2024, is the sentence for that U.S. federal conspiracy conviction—not a new sentence for the Indonesian murder charge. The Justice Department’s sentencing announcement was issued January 18, 2024.
According to the Justice Department’s account, Schaefer killed von Wiese-Mack while Mack was present. The two put her body in a suitcase and tried to leave in a taxi; after the driver refused their fare, they abandoned the suitcase in the taxi. Prosecutors requested 28 years, while Mack’s lawyers sought 15 years, ABC News reported. Judge Matthew Kennelly imposed 26 years, saying, “This was a brutal, premeditated crime.” ABC’s sentencing report identifies Kennelly as the judge.
The Washington Post reported that the sentence also included $262,708 in restitution and a $50,000 fine. Prosecutors alleged that Mack and Schaefer sought access to a $1.5 million trust fund; Mack denied that financial motive, according to the paper. The Washington Post’s report provides those sentencing details and the attributed accounts.

How the U.S. case differs from the Indonesian conviction
Mack and Schaefer were convicted of local criminal charges in Indonesia in 2015. Mack received a 10-year Indonesian sentence and served seven years; Schaefer received an 18-year Indonesian sentence, according to the Justice Department. Mack was released and returned to the United States in November 2021, where she was arrested on federal charges.
| Proceeding | Heather Mack | Tommy Schaefer |
|---|---|---|
| Indonesia, 2015 | Convicted on local charges; sentenced to 10 years and served seven years, according to the Justice Department. | Convicted on local charges; sentenced to 18 years, according to the Justice Department. |
| United States | Pleaded guilty to conspiracy to kill a U.S. national; sentenced to 26 years in federal prison in January 2024. | Indicted on three federal counts after returning in February 2026; pleaded not guilty, with trial scheduled for January 2027, according to the Associated Press. |
These are separate proceedings in different countries, involving different charges. The sentencing announcement does not establish that the Indonesian and U.S. terms simply add together or specify how time served in Indonesia is credited toward Mack’s federal term. It therefore does not support a definite calculation of how long she will actually remain in prison.

What changed after Schaefer returned to the U.S.
In February 2026, Schaefer returned to the United States to face a three-count federal indictment. The Justice Department’s February 26 update describes the charges as allegations; an indictment is not proof of guilt, and Schaefer is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The Associated Press reported that he pleaded not guilty and that his trial was set for January 2027. A scheduled trial date can change. The Justice Department’s update and the AP report describe the new U.S. case.
