Heated Rivalry is a romance-first hockey drama about two star players whose public competition conceals a private relationship that grows over years. Created by Jacob Tierney for Canadian streamer Crave and adapted from Rachel Reid’s Game Changers books, the six-episode first season is less interested in the mechanics of hockey than in what it costs Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov to keep love and rivalry in separate compartments.
What is Heated Rivalry about?
Hudson Williams plays Shane Hollander, and Connor Storrie plays Ilya Rozanov: professional hockey rivals whose attraction develops into a relationship they initially keep secret. The story follows that connection across years, setting the players’ public personas against the intimacy they share away from the rink.
That contrast is the show’s central engine. Their rivalry provides a vivid public frame, but the emotional stakes come from how the relationship changes as their careers and private lives continue. Creator and director Jacob Tierney described the series to CBS News as “laser-focused on that love story,” with little diversion from it. That focus is a strength if you want the romance at the center; viewers looking for a hockey procedural or a broad ensemble drama may find the scope deliberately narrow.
How does the romance shape the series?
The show’s appeal rests on the tension between what Shane and Ilya perform for the public and what they allow themselves in private. The relationship unfolds over time rather than resolving its central conflict immediately, giving the rivalry and secrecy room to affect the characters’ choices.

The intimate scenes are part of that storytelling, not simply a break from it. In its review, The Atlantic argues that the sex scenes track changes in the relationship; it describes them as sexually frank but not graphically explicit. That is the publication’s critical assessment, not a guarantee of how every viewer will experience the material. The series is best approached as an adult romance with frank sexual content, rather than as a conventional sports drama.
What book is Heated Rivalry based on?
The series adapts Rachel Reid’s Game Changers books, with the first season centered on her novel Heated Rivalry. The book is a natural next step for viewers who want to spend more time with the story’s source material; it is the source novel, not a season purchase or a substitute for checking streaming availability.

Reid told CBS News that she enjoys forbidden romance, rivals-to-lovers stories, queer love stories with happy endings, and hockey. Those ingredients help explain the adaptation’s particular combination of sports rivalry and romance, while Tierney’s comments point to the screen version’s concentrated focus on the couple.
Where can I watch Heated Rivalry?
Availability depends on country and current rights. The first season was created for Crave in Canada. Warner Bros. Discovery announced its HBO Max launch in the United States and Australia: the six-episode season began with two episodes on Friday, November 28, 2025, followed by weekly releases through the Friday, December 26 finale. Those dates describe the original rollout, not a guarantee that the series remains in a particular catalog today.

Bell Media says the series is distributed internationally by Sphere Abacus and is available in more than 130 countries. That does not mean one streaming service carries it everywhere. Before subscribing, check the local catalog and the route available to you—direct subscription, a participating TV provider, or an applicable device or platform. Bell Media describes Crave as available directly to Canadians and through multiple devices, platforms, and participating TV providers; the cited announcements do not give a country-by-country service list.
Is Heated Rivalry getting a season 2?
Yes. In an August 25, 2026 announcement, Bell Media scheduled Season 2 for spring 2027. That is a seasonal window, not an exact premiere date. The announcement names Williams and Storrie among the returning leads and says Daniel Diemer will play Ryan Price and Shaheen Jafargholi will play Fabian Salah. Earlier official casting information names Justice Smith as Harris Drover and Charlie Gillespie as Troy Barrett.

How has the series been received?
Bell Media reported in August 2026 that the series received 18 Canadian Screen Award nominations and won 16. The company also cited a Peabody Award, a Television Academy Honors Award, and a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding New Television Series. Those tallies and honors are Bell Media’s account.
CBS News reported in 2026 that Warner Bros. Discovery attributed more than 10.5 million viewers per episode in the United States to the series. The report attributes that figure to the distributor; it does not present it as an independently audited measurement.
