Heated Rivalry is a hockey romance about Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, rival professional players whose private relationship develops alongside their public competition. It is the second book in Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series. Reid says the story spans almost a decade, is not a traditional slow burn, and does not end with a definitive happy ending.
What is Heated Rivalry about?
Shane Hollander captains the Montreal Voyageurs, while Ilya Rozanov captains the Boston Bears. They face off as high-profile hockey rivals, but away from the public eye they become involved with one another. The secrecy surrounding their relationship complicates both their careers and their growing feelings.
Harlequin presents the novel as an enemies-to-lovers hockey romance. Reid offers a more nuanced expectation: “It’s not quite enemies-to-lovers, it’s not a traditional slow burn, it spans almost a decade, and it doesn’t have a definitive happy ending.” Rachel Reid’s commentary on the novel also notes that the published story’s Part Two and epilogue were added after editorial feedback.

This is the publisher’s series order. Readers looking for the direct follow-up to Shane and Ilya’s story can continue with The Long Game; the other novels are also part of Game Changers.
Is it a slow burn, and does it have a happy ending?
Reid says the story covers almost a decade but is not a traditional slow burn. The relationship develops over a long period, but that does not mean the book follows the familiar pattern of withholding romantic progress until the end.
Rank #2
For the ending, Reid’s description is the clearest guide: it does not have a definitive happy ending. Readers should not approach it expecting the story to resolve every question with a conventional, fully conclusive romantic finale.
