What is Heart Eyes about?
Directed by Josh Ruben and written by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy, Heart Eyes follows Ally, a cynical advertising executive, and Jay, her hopelessly romantic colleague. The Heart Eyes Killer stalks and murders couples on Valentine’s Day; when the coworkers are mistaken for a couple, they become the next targets. Is Heart Eyes scary or funny?
The comedy and romance
The film’s strongest hook is the friction between Ally and Jay: their opposing attitudes toward romance supply the banter and the romantic-comedy setup. The premise also gives Ruben room to poke at familiar Valentine’s Day and rom-com conventions without abandoning the couple-at-risk slasher framework.
Ruben described the intended balance in a DGA Q&A moderated by Zelda Williams after a Los Angeles screening: “We always came back to legitimately Nora Ephron and legitimately Wes Craven. Let’s not shortchange either genre. So how can we never play terror for real and never caught trying to be funny. It was a bit of a challenge because we had a myriad of takes and options. What I realized — with our types of genre benders — is it is music.” That is the director’s stated aim, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the tonal mix equally successful.

The slasher and suspense
The killer and the threat to the leads give the movie a genuine horror plot, but the tension is less consistent than the romantic-comedy interplay. In her February 7, 2025 review for the Los Angeles Times, Amy Nicholson calls it a “decent date-night diversion” and finds the leads’ repartee and rom-com satire stronger than the scare mechanics. She characterizes the scares as middling and the killer’s eventual motivation as weak or silly. Those are Nicholson’s critical judgments; viewers looking mainly for sustained suspense may find the film less satisfying than its premise suggests. Read the Los Angeles Times review.
Is Heart Eyes gory?
Yes. Gore is a substantial part of the film, not a minor element behind the jokes. Apple TV’s U.S. listing gives it an R rating for strong violence and gore, language, and some sexual content. In the UK, the BBFC’s 2025 home-entertainment classification describes strong bloody violence and gore, including impalements, slashings, stabbings, weapon use and injury detail, as well as threats. It also notes strong language, sexual references, a brief sex scene, and flashing images. The BBFC notes describe the UK release and do not replace the U.S. rating.

Watch it if you want a horror-comedy with a real romantic-comedy angle, lively lead banter, and bloody slasher violence. Go in expecting more success from the romance and satire than from the scare sequences, and less reliable tension than the killer premise might promise. If sustained fear or especially sharp slasher plotting is your priority, Nicholson’s assessment points to the film’s main weakness.
