In the United States, HBO Max allows two simultaneous streams on Basic with Ads and Standard, or up to four ordinary streams on Premium. Sports are limited to two devices even on Premium. These are playback limits—not caps on how many devices can be signed in to your account.
HBO Max screen limits by U.S. plan
HBO Max uses “screen limit” to mean the number of devices actively playing video at the same time. A TV, phone, tablet, computer, streaming player, set-top box, or game console counts when it is streaming; a device that is simply powered on or signed in does not automatically count. The plan details and prices below are for the United States as of August 2026. Prices exclude applicable taxes and may differ when billed through a third party. Annual prices are presented by HBO Max as approximately 16% savings. Availability of 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos depends on the title and supported equipment. Premium increases the ordinary stream allowance; Standard does not. Moving from Basic with Ads to Standard adds downloads and other plan features, but still allows only two simultaneous streams.
Streams, signed-in devices, profiles, and downloads are different

HBO Max allows up to five profiles, but the stream allowance applies to the subscription account, not each profile. For example, five profiles on Standard still share two simultaneous streams; five profiles on Premium share up to four. HBO Max’s profile guidance explains profile features and the profile limit.

Downloads are not bonus streams. A person who downloads an eligible title in advance may be able to watch offline while others stream, but this depends on the plan, title, device, and download rules. Basic with Ads has no downloads; Standard permits up to 30 and Premium up to 100. Downloads are for supported mobile devices rather than generally for computers or TVs; some titles are excluded, and some series are limited to 25 downloaded episodes from that series. What the “streaming on too many devices” error means
The message usually means the account has reached its plan’s simultaneous-stream allowance. On Basic with Ads or Standard, a third active stream can be blocked; on Premium, a fifth ordinary stream can be blocked. A stream may still be active on another device even if no one appears to be watching it, or a previous session may not yet have released.

HBO Max says it can take a few minutes after another stream stops before a different device can start. The service does not state a guaranteed session-release time, so closing an app, turning off a TV, or switching profiles should not be expected to free a stream instantly.
How to fix the error
- Ask someone to stop a stream. End playback on a device that is actively watching HBO Max, then wait a few minutes before retrying on the blocked device.
- Check the plan. On a phone, tablet, or computer, open the profile and choose Subscription. On a TV device, open Settings, then Subscription. Labels can vary slightly by platform or app version.
- Review signed-in devices. Open Profile → Account and Devices to inspect the listed devices, profile names, sign-in dates, and countries.
- Sign out devices you do not recognize or no longer use. An adult-profile user can select the X beside a listed device. This helps remove unwanted access or stale sessions, but it does not raise the plan’s stream limit.
- Retry after restarting the app. If playback remains blocked after streams have stopped, sign out and back in, force-close or restart the app, and check whether the app or service is having a problem before changing plans.
- Upgrade only if the household needs more ordinary streams. Premium provides up to four ordinary streams; if a session is merely stuck or unwanted, fixing that is the more direct solution.
HBO Max’s too-many-devices help page recommends stopping another stream and notes the possible delay before starting playback elsewhere. The device list is a security and account-management tool, not a register whose size determines the number of streams.

Sports, pay-per-view, and Extra Member limits
- Sports: HBO Max states that sports can be watched on two devices at once, including for Premium subscribers. Premium’s four-stream allowance does not mean four simultaneous sports streams.
- Pay-per-view: HBO Max’s U.S. plan terms say a purchased PPV event can be streamed on one device at a time. Event or provider rules may vary, so check the applicable terms for a specific event. HBO Max’s U.S. plan comparison describes these restrictions.
- Extra Member: An Extra Member account has one stream, separate from the account holder’s main stream count. This is different from adding a profile to the main account; an ordinary profile shares the account’s allowance.
Which plan makes sense for your household?
- Choose Basic with Ads if two streams are enough, ads are acceptable, 1080p is sufficient, and offline downloads are not needed.
- Choose Standard if two streams are enough but downloads matter. Do not select it expecting a third stream; its ordinary limit is the same as Basic with Ads.
- Choose Premium if three or four people regularly watch different programs at the same time, or if eligible 4K UHD, Dolby Atmos, or the higher download allowance matters. It will not lift the two-device sports limit.
- Wait before upgrading if the error is occasional, a stream may still be active, an unfamiliar device may be using the account, or the issue appears to be an app or connection problem. Premium also will not change the separate sports, PPV, or Extra Member restrictions described above.
For a household considering an authorized separate-account option, an Extra Member has one stream apart from the main account’s allowance. HBO Max’s device and streaming guidance is at its account and device help page. Plan availability and billing controls can differ for subscriptions purchased through third parties.
