Updated August 18, 2026: Some Roku TV, player, and stick owners continue to report HBO Max (sometimes labeled Max) closing, freezing, or returning to the Roku home screen. Neither HBO Max nor Roku currently documents a single Roku-wide crash incident or a universal repair date. HBO Max’s official Roku guidance still recommends updates, sign-out, restarts, a 20-second power cycle, reinstalling the channel where permitted, and launching titles through Roku Search.
What “crashing” can mean on Roku
Not every HBO Max failure has the same cause. Identify the symptom before changing settings:
- The app closes immediately after launch.
- A title starts, then the app returns to the Roku home screen.
- The picture freezes while audio continues.
- You see a black screen, loading loop, or splash screen that never finishes.
- The Roku TV itself restarts or powers off.
- Only one movie or episode fails, while other titles play.
- HBO Max and several unrelated apps crash together.
Roku separates app-loading failures, title-specific playback problems, service interruptions, network faults, and device issues. That distinction determines whether HBO Max, Roku, or your network should handle the case. See Roku’s troubleshooting guidance at Roku support.

No public HBO Max or Roku notice in the available material confirms a current platform-wide Roku crash bug as of August 18, 2026. HBO Max’s Roku troubleshooting page gives procedures but does not name a current root cause, promise a universal fix, or publish an ETA for a patch.

Recent Reddit posts describe crashes on Roku TVs and after Roku OS updates, but they are individual reports rather than incident confirmation. One report mentions Roku OS 15.2.4 Build 3442 on a TCL Roku TV, while also describing failures in other apps and HDMI playback; that pattern is not proof of an HBO Max-only defect. Resolved July 2026 service incidents listed by third-party monitors do not establish an ongoing Roku-specific outage: incident record and incident record. The accurate status is that some users still report crashes, but no public universal fix or confirmed repair timeline has been established.
Run this five-minute isolation test first
- Open two or three other Roku apps and play something briefly.
- Try several HBO Max titles, not just the one that failed.
- Test HBO Max on a phone, computer, game console, or another supported TV on the same network.
- Record whether the Roku returns to Home, freezes, reboots, or merely buffers.
- Note your Roku model, TV make and model, Roku OS version/build, HBO Max app version if shown, and whether the failure occurs at launch, after an advertisement, or when resuming playback.
If only HBO Max fails on one Roku while it works elsewhere, the local channel/device combination is more likely. If several apps or HDMI sources fail, investigate the Roku TV, operating system, heat, storage, or power. If the same title fails on multiple devices, consider a title or service-side problem. HBO Max recommends trying another supported device in its playback guidance.

Official troubleshooting sequence
1. Check the connection
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings > Network > Check connection.
- Retry HBO Max. If possible, test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi and pause heavy network use by other devices.
- Restart the modem and router if several apps or devices have connection problems.
HBO Max lists at least 5 Mbps for HD and 50 Mbps or more for 4K. Those are streaming-capacity recommendations, not proof that a fast connection cannot coexist with an app crash.
2. Update the HBO Max channel
- Highlight HBO Max (or Max) on the Roku Home screen.
- Press the Star (*) button.
- Select Check for updates, then reopen the channel.
3. Update Roku software
Open Settings > System > System update > Check now. Some devices label this Software update. Menu wording varies by Roku OS version and device type.
4. Sign out and restart
- In HBO Max, open the Settings icon and choose Sign Out.
- For a Roku player, use Settings > System > System restart.
- For a Roku TV, use Settings > System > Power > System restart.
- Sign in again and test more than one title.
5. Unplug the device
Unplug the Roku player or TV, wait 20 seconds, reconnect it, and launch HBO Max. This power cycle is different from briefly pressing a television’s power button.

6. Remove and reinstall the channel when allowed
- Highlight HBO Max and press Star (*).
- Choose Remove app and confirm.
- Restart the Roku.
- Search the Streaming Store for HBO Max, select Add app, and sign in.
If the subscription was purchased through Roku and remains active, HBO Max says the normal remove option may be unavailable. Do not cancel or change billing solely to troubleshoot a crash.
7. Launch through Roku Search
Open Roku Search, find a specific HBO Max movie or series, and select HBO Max from the result. This is an official workaround, not a guaranteed repair.
What to do if the problem began after a Roku update
Write down the exact OS version and build, then check whether Netflix, YouTube, other apps, and HDMI inputs also trigger restarts. A broad failure pattern makes a Roku TV or OS issue more plausible; it does not prove that an update caused HBO Max to crash. Older Roku hardware, integrated Roku TVs, heat, memory pressure, or power faults can produce similar symptoms.

Roku Community discussions note that channel developers maintain app-specific channels when the problem is isolated to one service. Older threads about HBO Max playback, including this channel-crash discussion and this playback thread, should not be treated as proof that the same defect remains unresolved today.

Use HBO Max on a phone, browser, game console, smart-TV app, or computer connected by HDMI. If you own another streaming player, connect it to the Roku TV’s HDMI input. If HBO Max works there on the same account and network, the external device bypasses the built-in Roku software and serves as a useful diagnostic—not proof that every Roku device is defective.

Consider replacement hardware only when the Roku is old, repeatedly crashes across apps, official troubleshooting and a reset have failed, and another platform reliably works. Official manufacturer pages include Roku players, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV 4K, and Google TV devices. Prices and availability change, so verify them before purchasing.
A factory reset is a last resort because it erases accounts, settings, and network details and may not help if the underlying app or OS defect remains. There is no official evidence here that changing DNS, opening router ports, using “cache cleaner” tools, or canceling and resubscribing fixes Roku crashes.
Bottom line
HBO Max crashes on some Roku devices remain reported as of August 18, 2026, but the public evidence does not establish one universal Roku bug or a published permanent fix date. Isolate the failure across titles, apps, devices, and networks; complete the official update, restart, power-cycle, and reinstall sequence; then send precise device and error information to the responsible support team. Use another device as a practical workaround before spending money or canceling your subscription.
