Hayden Panettiere’s style is best understood as eclectic rather than governed by one silhouette: the documented looks range from leather and denim to gowns, minis, and a lace jumpsuit. The “only a short person can wear it” premise is not supported by the evidence. These 20 selections are a subjective retrospective, not a definitive ranking or a set of rules about what petite people should wear.
Red-carpet looks with distinct silhouettes
1. A black one-shoulder column at the 2008 Alfred Mann Foundation gala
Panettiere wore a clean-lined black column dress with a silver clutch, large understated earrings, and red lipstick at the November 2, 2008 gala. Glamour’s writer argued that the cut and simple lines elongated her frame; that is one writer’s styling opinion, not a guaranteed effect of the dress. Read Glamour’s event coverage.
2. A shimmering Armani mini at the 2012 American Music Awards
At the 2012 American Music Awards, she wore an Armani dress and carried an Armani handbag, with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes. Teen Vogue described the short, shimmering dress as flapper-inspired—a playful reference to its sparkle and party-ready mood. See Teen Vogue’s look coverage.
3. A lace halter jumpsuit at the 2013 CMT Artists of the Year
For the Nashville event, Panettiere wore Lover’s “Commune” lace halter jumpsuit with relaxed black trousers, copper platform peep-toes, and a simple ponytail. It offers a less expected alternative to a red-carpet gown while keeping the outfit polished. See the event look details.

4. A Lorena Sarbu dress at the 2014 Primetime Emmys
Us Weekly identified Panettiere’s dress at the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards as Lorena Sarbu. Nashville costume designer Susie DeSanto praised its balance of “sexy, classy, and elegant.” That assessment came from DeSanto, who was discussing wardrobe and styling, rather than from a universal standard for formalwear. Read Us Weekly’s interview with the costume designer.
5. A peach empire-waist gown at the 2007 Primetime Emmys
Seventeen’s 2007 retrospective includes Panettiere in a peach empire-waist gown at the Primetime Emmy Awards. The raised waist and soft color make this a notably different red-carpet choice from the crisp black column dress she wore the following year. See Seventeen’s 2007 look gallery.
6. A Grecian-inspired gown at the 2007 HBO Golden Globe after-party
Glamour’s retrospective identifies a strapless, Grecian-inspired gown at the HBO Golden Globe after-party. It is important to keep this event distinct from the separate Grecian look Glamour identifies at the 2007 Golden Globes; the captions do not justify merging them or assigning both the same designer. Browse Glamour UK’s fashion retrospective.
7. A multicolored sweetheart gown at the 2007 People’s Choice Awards
Seventeen’s gallery records a multicolored sweetheart gown at the People’s Choice Awards. The neckline and mix of colors give this look a more decorative, youthful character than the single-color formal dresses elsewhere in the retrospective. See the gallery caption.
8. A fitted blue dress at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards
At the MTV Video Music Awards, Panettiere paired a fitted blue dress with a gold clutch, bangles, and earrings. The accessories add warm metallic contrast without competing with the dress’s color. See Seventeen’s event photos and captions.
9. A sparkly dress at the 2007 Kids’ Choice Awards
Another Seventeen-documented 2007 appearance pairs a sparkly dress with metallic accessories at the Kids’ Choice Awards. The combination leans into the event’s lively atmosphere rather than the restraint of a traditional evening gown. See the Kids’ Choice Awards look.
Short dresses, long dresses, and changing proportions
10. A monochrome striped bodycon dress at the 2007 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show
Glamour’s retrospective includes Panettiere in a monochrome striped bodycon dress at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Its close fit and graphic stripes make it one of the gallery’s more striking examples of a short, fitted silhouette. See the look in Glamour UK’s gallery.
11. A frothy pink dress at the 2004 Raising Helen premiere
For the Raising Helen premiere, the retrospective notes a frothy pink, prom-style dress. Its soft, embellished look sits firmly in the youthful premiere-dressing mode of the period. Browse the dated gallery.

12. A maxi dress in 2003
Glamour UK recalls Panettiere in a maxi dress with blonde waves in 2003, describing the outfit as hippy-chic. It is a useful counterpoint to the many minis and fitted dresses: her documented choices include long, flowing proportions too. See Glamour UK’s retrospective.
13. A floaty red boho dress at a 2012 party
One 2012 party look combines a floaty red boho dress with a yellow clutch. The bright accessory gives the outfit a deliberate color contrast and a more relaxed feel than her awards-show styling. See the party look in the gallery.
14. A little dress and beachy hair at a 2006 Teen Vogue event
Glamour UK calls out a little dress and beachy hair at a Teen Vogue event in 2006. The casual hair keeps the short dress from reading as overly formal, making the overall look feel youthful and easy. See the retrospective’s captioned images.
Leather, denim, and off-duty pieces
15. Leather pants and a houndstooth flat cap at the 2001 Joe Somebody premiere
Glamour UK’s retrospective remembers Panettiere in leather pants, a statement belt, and a houndstooth flat cap at the Joe Somebody premiere. The mix of leather and patterned headwear makes this early look more individual than a standard premiere outfit. See the 2001 image and caption.

16. Jeans and a bright top at the 2005 Teen Choice Awards
For the Teen Choice Awards, she wore jeans with a bright top that echoed the event backdrop, according to Glamour UK’s gallery. It is a straightforward casual pairing that still responds to the setting through color. Browse the Teen Choice Awards look.
17. A leather kilt, blazer, and knee-high boots at the 2006 Big Momma’s House 2 premiere
The combination of a leather kilt, blazer, and knee-high boots gives this premiere outfit a sharper, more structured edge than the soft dresses in the retrospective. The materials and layers do the visual work without relying on a gown. See the 2006 premiere look.
18. Leather skinny pants at the 2009 H&M and Jimmy Choo launch
At the H&M and Jimmy Choo collaboration launch, Panettiere wore leather skinny pants and a zebra-print clutch. The animal-print accessory supplies a pattern contrast against the sleek trousers. See Glamour UK’s gallery caption.
19. A sleek silk dress in 2010
Glamour UK’s retrospective notes a sleek silk dress coordinated with reddish-brown hair in 2010. The gallery also includes separate all-black and off-duty looks from around this period, but without a verified venue caption they should not be assigned to a specific event here. 20. An all-black outfit for a different mood
The same retrospective includes an all-black look among Panettiere’s later outfits. Its value in this selection is the contrast it provides with the bright red party dress, the peach gown, and the patterned casual looks—not a claim that black is her signature. See Glamour UK’s style evolution gallery.

Panettiere has resisted a single style label. In an interview reproduced by Cinema.com, she said: “I still can’t define my sense of style. My sense of style is like my taste in music. It’s very eclectic and it’s very all over the place. It all depends on how I’m feeling that day. I love short, tight dresses, I love pant suits, I love jeans and baggy sweatshirts. I love everything.” Read the Cinema.com interview. That range is also visible in the documented outfits: gowns and minis share space with denim, leather, and relaxed pieces.
How to borrow the style without treating it as a height rule
The strongest practical lesson is variety, not a formula for a particular body type. If you want to draw inspiration from these looks, start with the occasion and the element you like, then adapt the garment to your own fit preferences and comfort.
- For a formal event: Choose a shape you enjoy—such as a column dress, an empire-waist gown, or a jumpsuit—and keep accessories purposeful.
- For a party: Try one focal point, such as a shimmering mini, a bright clutch, or a contrasting shoe, rather than copying every accessory from a photograph.
- For casual wear: Pair a familiar base like jeans or black trousers with one distinctive texture or pattern, such as leather or animal print.
- For a long silhouette: Treat the 2003 maxi as evidence that long garments appear in her style history, not as proof that any particular length flatters everyone.
When looking for a similar garment, “black lace halter jumpsuit” is a useful descriptive search inspired by the 2013 Lover outfit. A similar item would not be the original designer piece, and the cited coverage does not establish current stock or availability.
Keep the Nashville costume separate from her personal wardrobe
Panettiere’s character Juliette Barnes on Nashville is a fictional role, so the character’s wardrobe is not direct evidence of Panettiere’s personal style. Costume designer Susie DeSanto described Juliette as body-conscious and said she was “always got the shortest skirt in the room,” while discussing the show’s styling and alterations during the pregnancy storyline. That character-specific account helps explain the show’s costume choices, not a rule for dressing like Panettiere off screen. Read DeSanto’s comments in Us Weekly.
