Spoilers for episode 4. The moment to watch for is the Bernice Worden storyline in “Green,” played by Lesley Manville. TechRadar calls it the series’ “real shocking moment” and says the relationship it depicts between Worden and Ed Gein is not supported by evidence.
What is the shocking moment?
It is in episode 4, titled “Green.” Netflix’s episode description says Ed is torn between two women and also introduces a young Texas filmmaker inspired by a real-life bogeyman. TechRadar identifies Lesley Manville’s introduction as Bernice Worden—and the storyline involving her and Gein—as the moment its headline refers to.
That storyline is part of a scripted drama, not a documentary record. Netflix presents Monster: The Ed Gein Story as a true-life tale, but the episode’s dramatic scenes should not automatically be treated as verified history.
What does the series depict, and what is reported about the case?
The relationship in the drama
TechRadar says there is no evidence for the relationship between Worden and Gein as portrayed in the series. That is the outlet’s account; the available reporting here does not independently establish the point through police or court records.

How Gein became a suspect
TechRadar also reports that Gein was identified as a suspect after leaving a receipt for antifreeze at Worden’s store. This detail, too, is attributed to TechRadar rather than presented as an independently verified finding from primary case records.
The historical setting
TIME’s overview places the case in Plainfield, Wisconsin, during the 1950s, and identifies Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan in its account of the case. That brief historical context is distinct from the show’s dramatized scenes and character relationships.

Why the series makes this kind of choice
In a Netflix Tudum interview, co-creator Ryan Murphy described the anthology’s recurring question as whether monsters are born or made, adding that in Gein’s case it was “probably a little of both.” That is Murphy’s interpretation of the series, not a historical conclusion about the case.
