In Haruki Murakami’s Killing Commendatore, a portrait painter finds a painting hidden in the attic of his mountain home—and the discovery draws his recognizable life toward the uncanny. The book’s central question is not simply what the painting means, but what art can do: how an image can alter what a person sees, and make the border between the real and the unreal feel traversable.
What is Killing Commendatore about?
The narrator is a thirty-something portrait painter whose wife has left him. He retreats to a mountain home once belonging to a famous artist. In its attic, he discovers a painting that had not been seen before. That find begins a sequence of mysterious events and a perilous journey into a netherworld, according to Penguin Random House’s synopsis.

The painting is not merely a clue or an atmospheric decoration. It is the hinge of the plot’s uncanny turn: something made by another artist becomes an event the narrator must reckon with. The Guardian’s 2018 account describes a small samurai figure emerging from the painting, alongside other disturbances including a spontaneously ringing bell and an underground shrine. These details mark the story’s shift without resolving what the images ultimately signify.
How does the painting open a door between worlds?
One way to read the painting is as a passage between artistic invention and lived experience. The narrator encounters an image, but the image does not stay safely contained as an object to observe. It prompts action and draws him toward a reality that operates by unfamiliar rules. Art, in this reading, is not just a representation of another world; it is a means by which the ordinary world becomes permeable to one.

That is an interpretation of the novel’s events, not a definitive key supplied by Murakami. The title’s “between alternate worlds” works best as a reading lens rather than a promise of a neatly explained parallel universe. The painting, the Commendatore, the well, and the underground journey can sustain different meanings without having one settled symbolic answer.
What does Murakami mean by the space between the real and unreal?
In an interview published by Le Monde on August 23, 2026, Murakami described a broader aim of writing multilayered stories that set the present world beside another dimension and locate reality in the space between them. That comment offers useful context for Killing Commendatore: its uncanny episodes need not cancel the everyday world for the novel to make both feel real. It does not establish a single author-approved explanation of this particular painting.
Murakami has also described the movement through darkness and underground spaces toward light as a fundamental structure of his stories. Speaking to The Guardian on October 11, 2018, he said: “That’s the fundamental structure of my stories: you have to go through the darkness, through the underground, before you get to the light.” The remark frames the novel’s subterranean journey, but it is a statement about his fiction broadly, not an explanation of any one scene.
What does art do in the novel?
The painting changes the narrator’s position. At first, he is a portraitist: someone who makes images of other people. After discovering the hidden work, he becomes a participant in the questions it raises. Looking is no longer passive, and interpretation alone cannot keep him at a safe distance. He must respond to what the image seems to set in motion.

This makes art both a threshold and a challenge. It can give form to something that ordinary life does not readily accommodate, while leaving that thing unresolved. The reader, like the narrator, has to move between what can be described as an event and what might be its meaning. The novel’s uncanny force lies partly in refusing to make those two levels perfectly coincide.
